Lol at you for thinking they get “real” prison time for stealing a car.

Yes. The cats are well back and easy to cut the pipe on each end with a sawzall.

On GM's the cats are up near the exhaust manifolds so much more difficult to cut off due to a lack of access

Back in the 1980s/1990s, thieves would hit car carriers and even some plant lots with GM, Chrysler, and Ford vehicles. They had to significantly improve their anti-theft measures on their property and with their products. They were legitimately horrible 30-40 years ago - building cars with exterior hood releases, very old school locks, quarter glasses that can be opened from the outside with a butter knife, etc.

The Japanese were in what seemed to be a perpetual recession in the 1980s and 1990s. They have long had a car theft problem in their country. In the 1980s had fun little features like steering wheel locks, wheel locks, etc. They were harder to steal or sabotage in the US because their cars came with those features.

Looks like the Americans and the Germans might be pulling ahead again, simply as a response to having to deal with different types of thieves lately. Most of them have the latest technology with encrypted ECMs, elaborate locking mechanisms, proximity key systems, and even vehicle tracking as standard on most models.

Kind of interesting to see how social issues drive car designs over the years. Social problems also influence building architecture designs as well.

Yeah, more laws always helps.

6 mos without a vehicle is not sustainable for me.
Insurance put me in a new truck loaner (through the dealer), so I'm okay for a while. Toyota hasn't given a timeline for getting the converter in stock, but they did say it would be weeks and not months.

Same dealer supplied the parts for collision damage to my dad's truck a few months ago. They were able to source unavailable parts from fellow dealers nationwide. When they couldn't match a single running board he needed, they found a completely new set and substituted that for the same price.

But, yeah, I'm not expecting to see anything for a while.

The real problem is the people advertising top dollar for them and then buying no questions asked.

Good question. Maybe carry the invoice from the muffler shop stating the est. delivery date. As long as you’re not due for an inspection sticker, you’ll be fine.

Fox 8 did a story about it. They said how much they get for them and how easy it was to steal one. So they basically did a story to encourage the theft of them…

Won't make a difference if no one does any real time for theft. Not saying it's what's happening in Baton Rouge or New Orleans (yet), but it's definitely occurring in a lot of cities across the country. That combined with the effort to antagonize and "defund" the police is a recipe for disaster.

These hyper progressive activist judges and DA's are hard at work to reduce incarceration. That's what they are elected to do. This has been a major priority in the US since the advent of "social justice". The response to media outrage over incarceration rates is to be soft on penalties rather than organize any real prevention efforts.

Unfortunately that means a revolving door for criminals. They get arrested, but the charges are either scaled back or dropped entirely, so they are back doing the same thing very quickly. This is basically a back door "de-criminalization" of real criminal behavior, and it's extremely frustrating for both law abiding citizens and police. It's highly caustic and corrosive to the cities where this philosophy is adopted by too many judges and DA's. And I think it threatens to reverse the gentrification efforts and gains made to city centers in the US over the past decade.

If you own property in a district that's intentionally soft on crime, you should consider relocating or possibly constructing some pretty big fences/walls. As bad as these shitty judges are on the residents...they are even worse on the local police force. And I don't think this is going away any time soon.

THIS might actually help. But it would have to extend beyond the city borders. It would need to almost be statewide.

Time for a high flow aftermarket cat...

My cousin arrived at work one day to find his entire fleet of box trucks, 10 plus, sans catalytic converters.

Or a cat bypass / test pipe and O2 simulator so there’s nothing for them to steal.

FWIW, the Toyota dealer said their new lot was hit a couple of months ago--they lost about 50 truck converters in one night.

I haven’t read past the first post so it might’ve been mentioned, but I think there is a skid plate you can buy with keyed nuts that’ll cover your cats to keep this from happening again.

But, yeah, EBRSO was less-than-motivated. I mean they were polite and all, but it was clear I was nothing but a number on their screen.

This is exactly why I hope these thieves, especially the gun toting and pointing ones, end up getting killed by the car/homeowners. The police will not help you and they will be on a revolving turnstile of jail/custody if they are even ever caught. Time to bring back true justice.

Yup, and if the police don’t want to step up, or their hands are tied, then just stay the hell out the way.

Put the thieves in the dumpster with the rest of the trash and don’t ruin the lives of hard working people just trying to protect their families, homes and property.

Because they’ve sacrificed their time and pieces of their lives for it.
