Car Horsepower is Wild

Car horsepower is out of control. 800 HP Dodge Hellcat. Lowly Camaros and Mustangs now have about 600 HP. Lambos are all at 800+ HP. Ferrari makes a 1,000 HP model.
And when you get into hypercars like McLarens or Bugatti or Koenigsegg, it's even crazier. They are all around 1,500 HP from the factory. Of course, only a few OT ballers can afford those.
And then when you go electric, it's also a different ballgame. Tesla makes a 1,000 HP SEDAN. And it's going to get wilder in the future. Pretty sure there is already an electric "hypercar" with 2,000 HP out there.
When I was a lad, most sportscars from the factory had about 250 HP. If you were above 300 HP, you had something pretty decent. 500 HP would be considered seriously modded. Supercars back in the day (Lambos, etc.) had about 450 HP.
When will these crazy horsepower wars stop? How does one even control a street car with 2,000 HP?

IDK much about these cars but do they have superchargers to compress the fuel/O2 mixture? How are these engines getting this HP?

Drive it 10K mi/yr and it'll be broke and in the shop all the time too

You must be a young lad. My 1987 Porsche 911 Turbo had 282HP. I'd consider that a pretty decent car.

My car has 230 hp and I’ll race anyone here. Perkins road, rolling start from Stanford Ave to Staring Lane.

For 99.9% of the drivers there are no roads with the capability of handling 70% of the performance of these vehicles. Lots of baws will have a death wish though.

What's more impressive is their ability to hook up with that HP.
A built Camaro back in the day needed drag wheels and tires or you would just sit there melting rubber until it connected and you started to go.
Now with AWD technology and launch mode you can actually get off the line effectively with 800HP.
Add in the electric vehicles with their lack of a transmission and its instant power to where you want it.
Rest of the world might be melting down around us, but there has never been a better time for performance vehicles than right now (setting aside price).

Nothing compared to the weight/HP ratio of a motorcycle.
480ish lbs and 200 HP? Woah.

Hellcat is a supercharged Hemi V8. It makes over 700 HP. The Demon is an upgraded version that pushes over 800 HP.
Not sure what Mustang and Camaro are doing.
I know some of the Lambos with 700+ HP are naturally aspirated (no turbo or superchargers).

Agreed. Horsepower is cheap.
My Genesis is 7 years old now and it still amazes me that I'm driving a 300+ HP vehicle when I was younger and used to dream (I had realistic dreams) of a sports car with about 250 hp.
Like my daily driver has more HP than a GT Mustang Cobra from 96. That's just insane to me, especially how I don't even think about it/realize it often.

There is a Christopher Titus routine covering this, as he bought a Dodge Viper while his show was still on the air and ended up totaling it while on a racetrack because he lost control. And that was about 20 years ago.

Hey, but you can get a pickemup truck that'll do 180 and go 0-60 in the time it takes you to say "truck nuts". Nevermind that it has a bed on it smaller than most TVs and you have to borrow your neighbor's trailer just to haul a new mattress set home.

There are diminishing returns to HP if the vehicle is not completely designed and fabricated for that kind of speed. The high-end Ferraris, Lambos, etc are designed for that. A 600+ HP Camaro/Mustang is a coffin.
The Telsa may have 1000 HP, but check the weight. Those batteries are heavy.

Sure, but I'm just giving an actual reference. I'd have been a freshman in those days when I used to religiously read Car and Driver (why? NO clue)

No shock you don't know shite about cars
And why are we acting surprised that cars have better performance over the course of almost 30 years? Wouldn't it be more surprising if they hadn't?

Forged internals and a shitload of boost.
