There was a $4k rebate on the car, they tell him he needs a $4k down payment, but that’s ok he can finance one. They sell him a $4k service contract, and keep the rebate. They point to it on the contract and show that 4K is coming off the price.

Let's be honest, they didn't even tell him that much. They just took his information and told him this is what the monthly note would be. Sign here, here, here, and here.

Why is that Mr. Bored Finance Guy spinning a tall tail?

Are you saying you think he’s the finance guy at this dealership, and is trolling a message board into thinking that his office scams people?

It clearly states it's the customer copy at the bottom.

Wierd. Truth in lending isn't supposed to be a customer copy.

You're right though. Plain as day.

ETA: looked at my last one, it only says customer. The truth in lending copy usually goes to the bank. Same company who printed both contracts

When I first got married I bought a $200 freezer via a finance company. I think that freezer cost me $400. I said, never again.

Not good. 1981, rates for a new car or truck was at 16%.

If he's no longer employed there, possibly.

But, bad deal or not, if real this guy didn't get scammed. Screwed. Not scammed.

Should he have read what he signed? Of course.

Am I 100% positive he was lied to and mislead? Yes.

The guy basically paid MSRP and financed it at 24%, bought a service plan that was 16% of the purchase price of the car and finances it at 13%, bought gap insurance without even having auto insurance, and doesn't have a DL.

That's incredible.
OLD AS TIME ITSELF

Caveat emptor is Latin for "Let the buyer beware"[1] (from caveat, "may he beware", a subjunctive form of cavere, "to beware" + emptor, "buyer"). Generally, caveat emptor is the contract law principle that controls the sale of real property after the date of closing, but may also apply to sales of other goods. The phrase caveat emptor and its use as a disclaimer of warranties arise from the fact that buyers typically have less information about the good or service they are purchasing, while the seller has more information. The quality of this situation is known as 'information asymmetry'. Defects in the good or service may be hidden from the buyer, and only known to the seller.

A common way that information asymmetry between seller and buyer has been addressed is through a legally binding warranty, such as a guarantee of satisfaction. But without such a safeguard in place the ancient rule applies, and the buyer should beware.

The yellow copy of the law contract (which this is) is the customer copy and the truth in lending copy.
