I just put my kids into karate and they really love it. Unfortunately, the place I put them in now seems like they cater to the masses and nursing them along instead of teaching them.

My kids had the opportunity to earn a stripe by setting a goal and start working on it, I have to write a letter and sign it saying she completed task. Well my hormonal 12 year olds goal was to do things with Her attitude and discipline.

I was talking to the teacher about it and why she hasn't earned her stripe and she tells me " We don't like to with hold stripes from our students, We recommend....." pretty much lie for my kid to move up without working for it.???

Plus, my poor son is so clumsy and uncoordinated, he is doing all sorts of stuff without even being helped, what so ever.

So at the end of the month we paid for, we will be moving them to a place that respects what karate is all about, any suggestions?

In all seriousness, I need my fence painted and car washed. Send them over.

Well Gary Plauche ruined the best one in Baton Rouge.

Elle Driver killed Pai Mai in Kill Bill so that's not really an option.

AFMA

I know of one other poster who trained with Master Tullier. I trained as an adult, but they definitely make you earn your promotions, even for the kids. They have locations in BR, Gonzalez, and Prairieville.

Are you wanting them to learn to be better people through Karate or do you want the to learn to defend themselves?

If you want them to learn to defend themselves send them to take Krav Maga somewhere. It's no nonsense and pretty brutal. To add there aren't really "belts" per se.

Screw Rex. If you call Dwight from the office he will handle all your karate needs. That is, if you are serious about learning from a true master or karate.

Most kids just care about getting belts and that’s what these karate places cater to.

My suggestion is to send your kids to Krav Maga or kickboxing, where they’ll actually learn something useful and get great exercise. The physical fitness and self defense knowledge will give them more confidence and satisfaction than useless karate routines and belts.

Are you sold on Karate, or would you be open to another martial art?

I took Brazilian jiu jitsu from age 9-13 and then from 16-25. There are 2 really good schools in Baton Rouge with black belt instructors. My oldest son goes to one of them, but has friends that go to the other.

Jiu-jitsu is better for self defense than karate, but has the belt system that Krav lacks. In my opinion stripe and color promotions mean more in jiu jitsu because it shows that certain skills deemed important by the instructor have been met, and it is completely merit based.

Some karate schools advance based on years of experience as opposed to mastery of skills.
