I taught Shotokan in Gonzales for 21 years. I retired 5 years ago. I love the art. The LSU / Capital City club is indeed a really traditional Karate school.
I also love Judo and BJJ. My son attends Gracie United. Coach Robbie is a good guy.

Good luck on your decision.

As in all things educational, class size is the most important factor

If you want the kids to learn an effective form of marshal arts Russell Jones Kickboxing teaches a variety of techniques, recently including karate. For balance and discipline Tai Chi is non-violent, as is yoga. Aikido is mostly defensive, Kimm's Institute of Self Defense teaches this as well as other martial art forms.

Karate...Krav Maga...no. Jiu Jitsu, it's the superior martial art. And the only one that'll actually be successful on the street.

Now if it's just exercise you're wanting for your kiddos, then yeah, karate is fine.

I've known him since we were kids.. He is a few years younger than me, but I always liked Roman.... But 2 or 3 fights ago.. It was on TV and he literally got body slammed.

How about Judo? I

Judo is the shite

if you want to teach your kid to develop incredible balance, then have them do lots of judo

learning how to land well is also highly underrated

Because kids change their minds or in my case your kid moves up in rank and gets an instructor who's less than fit for the job and kills their interest and youre stuck paying for that shite for months after. I gave them a heads up telling them he's not enjoying the new class ect, then even said this will be his last week. About 3 months later I get a call saying I owe over $300. So again, if a school tries to rope your kid into a contract, walk away. Good schools dont have to use contracts to keep students coming back.

At my school we have an easy and up front cancellation policy. Everything is transparent and easily understandable. However, there are many places that do business like what you're describing. Most of them being traditional martial arts academies that focus on children.

I'd recommend Krav Maga... self defense will only back you into a corner. I'd want something that would back a mother fricker up off me real quick and detour all others with pure fricking clarity!
