I really recommend putting your kids in a wrestling club and maybe having them do BJJ or Krav Maga in the offseason.
Wrestling teaches a ton and produces fitness and strength better than any other youth sport. The mental strength and resiliency it teaches are huge, too.
And - the kids actually have plenty of opportunities for competition.

Are you wanting them to learn to be better people through Karate or do you want the to learn to defend themselves?
A mixture of both. One child has a heart of gold, and don't have a foot to stand on.
The other.. Well... She's a academic geek, loves art, and is extremely into theater, and wants to be a paleontologists( since she was 3). but when no one is on your level, You start to become bitter being all alone. So....

I won't debate that, but in a real life situation you want to stay on your feet, not be rolling around on the ground.

Competitive Gymnastics can compete with wrestling as far as overall fitness is concerned. My daughter's team conditions/practices 3 times a week for 3 hours each day. Yoga mixed with cardio and body weight exercises. 7-8 year olds and all are in great shape.

Gymnasts are some of the most jacked, fittest people on the planet.

To that I would say most fights end up on the ground regardless, and you want to know how to escape bad positions, establish dominant ones, and get the hell out of dodge.
Plus the margin of error on a joint lock or a choke is larger than the margin of error for a strike.

I have a relative, who has done numerous martial arts around the country and he swears this is by far the best out there. Han Mud Do -Kimm's Institute of Self-Defense - Baton Rouge Dr. Kimm created it and still teaches it.. also there is a Praireville location.

The only "real" Karate School left in Baton Rouge, absent the LSU Karate Club, which is only college students, is Capital City Karate Club. They meet at Foxy Health Club.
