A California bill that aims to reduce the risk of brain injury by banning tackle football for children under 12 cleared its first hurdle Wednesday after a legislative committee voted for the measure to be considered by the state Assembly.

The bill is supported by advocates seeking to protect kids from brain damage but opposed by coaches who warn it would cut off youths from an important source of physical activity.

A legislative committee voted 5 to 2 during a public hearing to advance the bill authored by Democratic Assembly member Kevin McCarty.

The players should say it's gender affirming.

Start them on ultimate frisbee (insane workout) or flag football. I don’t understand the blind support of contact football given all of the new information out there regarding CTE

Not a bad idea. The number of quality coaches at the juniors level is tiny

I’ve read that California is the land of fruits and nuts.

No one wants to play football with fruits that want to grab your nuts.

Good for them. I got a concussion in peewee football when I was 10 and ever since then I shite my pants every time I sneeze.

CTE is made up liberal bullshite just like EVs and female orgasms. I'm gonna make my son put on a helmet and headbutt a pine tree to strengthen his neck muscles and brain fluid so he doesn't cry like a pussy when he takes a hit

I personally agree with this, but don’t think states should be involved in outlawing the sport.

I don’t keep up with all of the latest research, but I think there are more questions or assumptions than answers right now.

Concussions are known to cause cancer in California.

In a vacuum, meaning a state/jurisdiction that didn't have a history of doing unprecedented harm to child development in a misguided attempt to save the elderly and eliminating beaches and outdoor skate parks to protect against a mild respiratory illness, this wouldn't strike me as THAT absurd.

That's fine. But under no circumstances should it be mandated by the state. Its a choice for the kids and their parents as to how much risk they are willing to tolerate.

There are many football coaches and former players supporting this idea. Teach the youngsters the fundamentals and the institute contact and tackling at age 11-12. Nothing more ridiculous than seeing 6 and 7-year-old kids wearing oversized helmets playing tackle football.

Jr high (7th grade) is a pretty normal time to start tackle football…so 12. Not a big deal IMO.

Kids 12 years and younger are not at risk for CTE, they do not have enough mass or build up momentum necessary for a significant coup-contrecoup head injury.

This.

Here’s a novel solution…how about educating parents in your district/state about the dangers of contact football under 12 instead of running this nanny state ban up the flagpole?

People who decide they’re going to do your thinking for you are pretty dangerous too.
