First question, makes their parents deal with them instead of the school. Second question, usually nothing changes because their parents can't do anything with them either. When I make phone calls to parents about student behavior, the vast majority of them are either apathetic, resentful towards me for calling them, defend their child's behavior no matter the situation, or openly admit that the child is the same way at home, and they don't have a solution.

That sounds like the suspension doesn't work for the student and the only benefit is it removes the child from the rest of the class. If an alternative exists where the child is still removed from the class, it seems worth trying.

there is a solution to what you are talking about. Enough suspensions, they get sent to these temporary disciplinary schools. BUT, most of the time instead of sticking it out and reforming their behavior: Mom and Dad just switch districts by changing the kids home address illegally.

DAEP in Houston I believe?

They should just ban disruptive behavior and it would solve all their problems.

That wouldn't be the "everybody gets a trophy" mentality that we live in now.

This is so beyond dumb, it's amazing.

re: California bans suspending disruptive/defiant students
My mom works for the school in south Louisiana. Here is the current system of discipline:

If a student misbehaves, that student is given an infraction. It’s just a piece of paper recognizing that there’s an issue. There are no real consequences.

After 4 infractions, the student will get an office referral. The student will have a visit from the principal. The result may or may not be detention. Usually not.

After 3 office referrals, the student will be recommended for suspension. There will be a meeting between the principal and the parents. In this meeting the parents will call the teacher and principal liars or accuse them of being the reason the student misbehaves. The student won’t face consequences as a result.

So, with all this said, a student has to be corrected TWELVE times before any real consequence is even remotely on the table. The faculty is so afraid of getting blasted in the media, that they usually just drop the case on the word from parents that their kids will do better. Of course, it’s an empty promise.

This is why you have the problems with teachers that you do. They either give up and don’t want to deal with it so they just go through the motions and collect a check, try to do the right thing and get fired for it or turn out to be a fricking predator because a predator will put up with anything for the chance at getting a victim.

There is ZERO accountability for the students or parents. It’s always the school’s fault. Or society’s fault. It’s never their own fault.

Looks like they want to bring justice everywhere but at the guilty party's feet. Same ole lib logic.

This is BS. My wife is a teacher and her principal doesn’t suspend anymore either. Then the principal gets up at meetings and brags about stats she’s submitting to the school district showing how suspensions are way down. The behavior is still there but there’s no punishment.

Which is the principal passing the buck to the next school.

Wonder why HS is a disaster? Middle schoolers who can’t behave.

Why are middle schools a disaster? Elementary school kids who can’t behave.

And a lot of those problem elementary school kids have shitty parents which create a lot of the original bad behaviors.

No one wants to fix problems while the kids are young and can still be corrected.

What if they like getting to stay home? Maybe being at school is a punishment

re: California bans suspending disruptive/defiant students
Well, the first time I did it I just lied my way out of any real punishment, but got a paddling on principle I suppose.
The second time I got caught red handed and me and two friends got paddlings and spent three afternoons helping the janitors clean the school.
I kept doing it, but managed to not get caught again.
This was late 90's-ish.

Three days of lunch detention. Eat last, sit at a separate table.

re: California bans suspending disruptive/defiant students
No kid gives a frick about missing their western civ class but take away the only time they have to socialize and it might deter bad behavior. I can tell you letting them sit at home and watch tv or post on social media isn’t much of a deterrent. And then they come back further behind and more disruptive.
