Not cool.
These situations are what Harbor Freight is for. Get a coupon and the generic version of the tool.

I bought so many one time use specialty tools that I have a took chest for them.
Am the stuff to with on transmissions, suspension, etc.
Sometimes I'll find a tool world somewhere else.
Some people return the oddest things.
I had a customer the other day with a warming fridge. She starts by saying "first I noticed my milk was sour, so I returned it. Then the next day my milk was sour so I returned that milk. Then I realized my meat wasn't that cold".
I'm thinking who returns milk.
To make things worse her chech she paid with bounced. Lol I should have known.

I’ve done it once.
Needed a 16’ A frame ladder to change out the fans in my house. I changed all 4 that were on cathedral ceilings so it had to be an A frame ladder. Those suckers were like $250, and I’d never use that again, and on top of that, it’s so god damn big I didn’t even know where I’d store it.
I asked if I could rent it since Home Depot had rental stuff, and they had no ladders to rent.
So I bought it , changed the fans and returned it, and I don’t feel bad about that.
The alternative would have been to buy it, use it once, and sell it.
My reasoning for returning is b/c the ladder was just too damn big to keep and never use.
I have plenty of tools that I’ve used once and likely never will again. Pretty trashy to buy something fairly cheap, use it and return it.

So I needed to crimp some connectors on some 1 guage AWG wire. I didn't see myself ever needing to do this again. I totally bought the 30 dollar crimpers from a big supplier, crimped the 4 connectors I needed to crimp, and am returning them. They weren't in clam shell (box) and I boxed them back up just like new.
I feel no shame.
Give it away to an electrician's apprentice and stop being a cheap POS

Years ago I worked for Sears - You would be amazed not only how often people abuse the return policy but who some of the people are that do it.

My former father-in-law would suggest this which leads me to believe he does it. He's a high functioning alcoholic so yes, trashy.
My FIL (RIP in peace) was kind of the opposite. He never knew where he put something or he left it outside and it rusted, so he bought the same crap over and over for decades. So much junk that didn't work.

100% Trashy. You're not getting any trashier.
Rent it like a man if you can't afford it.

I had to buy one of those hardwood floor nailers and only needed it for one small room. I sold it on FB Marketplace for $25 less than I paid for it. Cheaper than renting one from HD.

I'm not sure what's worse, that or coming on a message board to brag about how trashy you are.

I did exactly the same thing from a big supplier not long ago and returned them
...after rubbing my butt cheeks all over the handles.
You are welcome

Just keep them. I don't get it.
If you crimp things 4 times throughout your life, and let's say 10 minutes to the store each way, plus 5 in the store, that's over an hour and a half of your life wasted. For $30.
Not to add in wear and tear to your vehicle, gas, the risk of a car crash or some other freak accident.
This doesn't even make financial sense in the long run.

i'm sad i had to get to the 4th page to read this.
HF exists for this reason. i still have a few different saws and grinders that work i bought 10 years ago because of a one off job.
i'm not buying a lawn mower, weedeater, chainsaw, or daily use drill from there, don't get me wrong.

I dont have a problem with it, and I wouldn't have a problem buying a tool that had been used like that once. I bought a 20 foot folding ladder to use to hang new light fixtures on a high ceiling, took that bitch back the next day. They didn't have one in the rental department, and I will not have another reason to access those specific spaces again. I sure as shite dont want to carve out space to store that big bitch anywhere either.
