I keep seeing people saying this and don’t understand. The zoo isn’t in the middle of some war zone. If you are too worried about driving a few miles down Scotland or Plank to visit then you have bigger problems. I would understand if the argument was it’s inconveneint to drive to that side of town

Isn't Louisiana in a financial crisis?

Are you suggesting the LA legislature confiscate BREC’s bank accounts to address the budget shortfall?

BREC has the money and donations to make the plan work so any argument from a monetary standpoint is dead. BREC needs to close the current zoo and BR not have a zoo or move it. The current setup is the real waste of money.

Broome will never let this happen.

But....lobby money from the construction firms that stand to benefit from winning such a big contract will do all in their power to sway the decision makers to open the City’s checkbook. BOOK IT.

Heretic

I know their baseball diamonds are bottom 10. They don't like baseball.

Can't talk about golf anymore, but their courses were very good to terrible depending on which one you played.

BREC is well funded, all facilities should be good.

There aren't many better free entertainment options in the area than watching black girls roll kayaks and flip the frick out in the pond at Greenwood park.

Not to mention the soothing "PLOOP" sound of stray bullets as they descend upon on the pond surface

Is there other land available for a zoo closer to downtown?

I read that the area by Forest Community Park was also being considered, but wasn't large enough. They apparently want a pretty big arse zoo.

Well they certainly need an area of land MUCH bigger than what they have now. The current zoo looks pretty depressing with how small the animals areas are.

I think BREC is a joke too but apparently they have won national awards. This is from 2017. BREC wins 2 Prestigious National Awards

Their websites says they are one of only a handful of park systems to win the "Gold Medal" award twice.

I disagree with this statement. It's gotten much better in the past 5 or so years. No, it isn't on par with Audubon. But does it need to be?

While the sponsored areas are nicer than they were in the past, my main issue is the amount of space the animals have being abysmal. Have you seen the area with the gators lately? They are all super crowded bc they are so large. The zebra area is amall as well. Animals that are used to having room to run in the wild need to have room to run in a zoo. The first time we took my kids my 4yo asked why the zebras were running back and forth in a circle. My response, “bc they ran out of room and didnt want to hit the fence”

Did you bother reading the scoring methodology? One-third of the score is dependent on what % of the population lives within a 10 minute walk of a public park. Hardly anyone in BR lives within a 10 minute walk of anything besides a strip mall or Circle K. That's not an indictment of the BR park system, but rather BR as a whole. Other metrics include dog parks per 10k residents, basketball hoops per 10k residents, and % of land that is publicly owned which together account for another one-half of the score. Those don't seem like reliable metrics for measuring the quality of a city's park system.

I believe the area where the zoo is now is the largest area they own. They do not utilize much of it for the zoo.
