I think moving the zoo is a giant waste of money but this reasoning is laughable. There is nothing around the zoo to spend money on. Maybe that gas station on the corner of the highway before you turn. Not even a McDonalds nearby. ETA: No McDonalds on Hwy 19 which is how most people come from BR.
There is a McDonalds on 19 just past Thomas Rd. where the zoo is. But I completely agree. How is moving a zoo going to have a “devastating” effect on the area?

This is a long term investment. Spend more money, have a completely up to date zoo, and be in a much better location. The extra money is well spent when you compare the two options
The brec study included revenue projections of the 2 options and moving the zoo is projected to bring in a decent amount more in annual revenue and made up the cost difference relatively quickly.

They should scrap the zoo all together.
There’s a world class zoo 75 miles down the road.

BREC wastes too much money on crappy golf courses. They have far too much money to spend. If they have all this money for sub par golf and $150M zoos then they need to lower our tax.

Wasn’t the park underwater in the flood? Hopefully the new control structure can help if that happens again. I don’t want lions and tigers and bears swimming around my backyard.

The zoo has a few animal enclosures that are a bit underwhelming, but it overall has a nice layout.
Place is a shithole
Half the animals look sedated

I think it is a great spot for it. Not too far from an interstate. Also, only a portion of the site flooded in 2016 and certain animals like giraffes have natural flood protection.

260 miles and you have the Houston Zoo.

BREC is going to replace the old zoo with a very elaborate park with kayaking
Kayaking in North Baton Rouge?? That’s stupid, Canadians can’t swim. Next thing you know they’ll install batting cages at Louisiana School for the Blind.

There is a ton of land there just sitting empty for the vast majority of the year.
It extends way the hell back there too, further than you probably realize. Supposedly, there is a old motorcycle track back there that hasn’t been used in decades.

The parks system in Baton Rouge is phenomenal. They are nationally recognized as one of the top 10 park systems in the country.
The park system in BR is nationally recognized in the bottom 10-15 in the country.
There are actual ranking for this.
Scruffy wants to see this supposed top 10 ranking. Every list Scruffy saw has the city ranked around 90.

Terrible location
Why even go to the BR zoo when you can get to Audubon Zoo in a reasonable amount of time.
All the Ascension schools take field trips to the New Orleans zoo over anything Baton Rouge can offer.
But if it ends the GReater BR State Fair I'm good!

Someone says it's top 10, you say its' not, neither of you link anything. you both suck.
I'm sure a well run small zoo that is very kid friendly/interactive would do very well at that location. We go to the zoo probably 2 or 3 times a year in the hood. The zoo brings absolutely nothing to that local economy b/c no one is stopping at that lone gas station.
move it and they'd see annual memberships skyrocket.
