The current zoo isn't in north Baton Rouge. It's way out in Baker.

Yes. This is literally 100 yards from Bayou Manchac which marks the border between EBR and Ascension Parish.

And the Zoo is technically in the city limits of Baton Rouge, but it is on the border with Baker.

$150 million?!?!?!?!?

What a waste of tax-payer money

Why exactly do we need to move the zoo?

Why can we not take $150 million and buy BRPD a new fleet and raise salaries, then fix some fricking roads.

BREC is the parish's park commission. Putting the zoo on the southern border is pouring gas on the fire. It's not centrally located. It floods there.
Airline is totally gridlocked too at certain times.

But I guess "they" want it as far away from "them" as they can can get it.

Audubon Institute has stuff all over the state, BR seems like a legit place to open up another zoo.

So much this. If there was enough parking and political will, I would put it across from the Kids Museum on the site of the City Park Golf Course.

Well frick me for building not too far behind that. Hopefully the smells and noises won’t travel too far, or at least be drowned out by the trash reving their crotch rockets on airline

Anyone know how much land BREC has at that location?

I bet a lot of y'all never been to the zoo. Been going there all the way back in the early 1980's with my kids and I still go with my grandson. The zoo were it is at,saw it's days. Way out dated for people and the animals.

Moving it out there would mean I would have to travel another 10 miles, but then again, I'm have 35 miles to go to the old zoo.

Out least out there people would have more food options than gas station snacks

Opponents of the idea, however, say moving the zoo out of north Baton Rouge would deliver a devastating blow to the area’s economy

I think moving the zoo is a giant waste of money but this reasoning is laughable.

There is nothing around the zoo to spend money on. Maybe that gas station on the corner of the highway before you turn. Not even a McDonalds nearby.

ETA: No McDonalds on Hwy 19 which is how most people come from BR.

The cleared off area is basically about a 1/4 of the entire property. BREC is one of the largest land owners in EBR, along with having a couple of hundred million in the bank thanks to voters blindly passing more money to them.

Nobody wants to drive to Baker to go to the zoo. BREC'S tax base, in particular. If BREC wants to perpetully get their millages renewed then this was inevitable. There are tons of young families on both sides of Manchac in that area. Perfect place for it.

My DIL drives to NO to see a nice zoo. She use to drive to Baker but over the last five or so years they let the zoo go to crap.

BREC didn't keep up what they had, why give them a new toy to break.

We have way bigger needs in EBR. A zoo is way down the list.

But if you did build a zoo it should be centrally located and not convenient for Prarieville. They don't pay EBR property taxes.

An EBRP zoo will never compete with Audobon. It just needs to be a nice, smaller zoo. Non EBRP residents can pay an additional fee, just like we do at Ascension and Livingston parks.

The Baker zoo was never nice, not even 30 years ago when I was in elementary school. The Baker zoo needs to be closed permanently, the only question is if and where and new zoo should be built.

I agree EBRP has larger needs. I wish we could empty the BREC snd Library coffeirs to solve traffic issues, but it ain't happening.
