We did it all the time on the westbank. Lots of fun unless someone's parents got after us. My younger cousin from Orange Texas lost an eye in the early 90s in a bottle rocket war. He's the only casualty I know personally...
Well within our acceptable losses range.

How about you tell us what you really call them, b/c I know you don't call them "whistling" chasers

We went to a firework stand today and heard the real name for them used.

We busted a huge neighborhood ring if kids playing these dangerous fireworks "games" a few years back. Ended sadly with one young man being badly burned about the head neck lips and genetaglia. It was utterly unseemly what they were doing with those things.

We used to have epic ones. I got hit near the eye once. That sucked. One year we built a fort out of fence boards and pointed them at a neighbor's house, whose kids we had issues with.
. We went through grosses of moon travelers. One kid got his pajamas set on fire. We had to get that out. He kept screaming "what to do? What to do".
Then I went to shoot a Roman candle and it backfired and set my starter jacket on fire and it burned into my wrist.
Fun times.
We were bad though, we had a high ranking cop on the block and his son was the worst one. Lol

Firecracker war in the back of a moving truckbed--nowhere to run or hide. Thundercrackers were the weapon of choice because of their unpredictability for both the thrower and the throwee (sometimes the wick lit to the end, sometimes the wick fell off and the Thundercracker exploded prematurely).
Ceasefire called when a cohort covered his face as protection against a thrown firecracker, forgetting that he had one lit in his hand to throw.

Everyone one of my friends has had some kind of fireworks injury. Nothing serious though, just minor burns, although one might be a little deaf in one ear, but we can't pinpoint that to fireworks
I distinctly remember one war we had one new years. Probably 20 of us. Burned a bunch if holes in the trampoline, almost blew up a boat, caught a tree on fire, many people were burned, fortunately the one person shot in the face was the only one wearing glasses.
Our dad's watched it all happen laughing until they saw the Roman candles being shot at the boat b/c me and my buddy was hiding it it. For some reason the gas tank lid wasn't on. I doubt the boat would have blown up, but I'm glad we didn't test it out by getting one of those ball of fires into it.
I would not stop my kids if they were havimg a fireworks fight. I'd simply tell them to put some safety glasses on since I have probably 10 of them in my truck.

I can remember my brothers and I saving up fireworks after the 4th and New Years, going out in the field and building a bunch of forts out of hay and sticks. Then we’d shoot them at each other and the forts would catch fire. Crazy times. Good memories.

When I was a volunteer firefighter years ago, we would put on the bunker gear and have roman candle wars....Good times

bottle rockets were fun roman candles mo fun but the ole man was very strict about gun safety even pop guns ya dont point guns a people even in play. Like others said though ok to shoot rockets or roman candle balls at each other.
Never did the BB gun wars but bottle rocket wars were a yearly occurrence. Did roman candle war once (I stress once) it ended very badly. My sister who was maybe 9 at the time took one to the shoulder and I took one to the groin. Burned through my pants and scorched my inner thigh barely missing my balls. Sister wigged out about her injury, told mom and dad, I got a beating, no more roman candle wars.
eta: My dad brought home a pile of safety glasses from his job and when we had bottle rocket wars we had to wear them. OSHA and shite.

Me and 3-4 friends launched an attack on another friends house, advancing across his back yard with roman candle and bottle rocket fire, directed at his elevated position in a kitchen window. The friend in the house, having the higher ground, defended his position well, giving as good as he got. That is until he cought the widow curtains on fire. A panicked truce followed as he doused the curtains in the sink.

We had bottle rocket wars back in the 70s out by Cook church in Ruston. Good times. Had a friend that lived on Greenwood road and dozens of kids would meet up over there. Never had any bottle rocket holders though. You had to light em and throw em at the right time to not get burned and still hit someone.
Fireworks were cheap back then. We’d buy 3-4 gross for 3 buck apiece and play all night. Also played a lot of kick the can.
