How about you tell us what you really call them, b/c I know you don't call them "whistling" chasers

I had forgotten about that "other" name for them until these posts.

Oh and yes on the bottle rocket and roman candle wars on my grandfather's rice farm. Never any significant injuries to speak of other than the occasional burnt clothing or close range roman candle backfire.

eta - We had a stray bottle rocket set a field on fire once but put it out before it got out of hand.

Yeah we had several names for them back then, but my kids only know them by whistling chasers.

I'd like to keep it that way.

Just like I would never make them go "pick a switch." Different times..

Cherry bombs and M-80s were the deal back in the 50s and probably 60s, my time. Bottle rockets weren't so popular.

Possessing a cherry bomb, or if you had rich friends who could buy a box full, made you pretty popular in the neighborhood. They'll blow up a porcelain commode at an elementary school, by the way.

Bottle rockets were good to throw out the window of a car until one blows back in, hits the seat next to a sack full of fireworks, and blows out the seat of your friend's dad's new '62 Biscayne.

Parents smoked in the car too

Evidently they still do here in Starkville. I saw it while out getting breakfast this morning.

Well, we were playing games, not trying to actually kill each other.
