lets be honest here, this is probably caused by a very small group of hipsters that dream of BR being Austin
I happen to be FB friends with one of these crybabies. That's how I saw the Professor's response.

It has been proven time and time again throughout the country and the world that increasing bicycle and pedestrian lanes/access increases property values and the quality of life in the surrounding areas. I'm not even including links, as a quick google search will net thousands of results.
In fact, I'd love to see an article that shows adding bike lanes is a negative.

I think the issue here is that the lane has been rather recently marked. But no indicated of "no parking" has been made.
When Capital Heights was redone they added no parking signs too.

The closest I get to riding my bike in Baton Rouge is either Hammond or Lafayette, far too many morons in that city.

Yeah, I agree. They are failing big time throughout the entire state when it comes to truly educating the public. You can't just throw down some lanes and a couple signs and expect it to work.

i didnt say it was a negative. Certainly one small bike lane on a residential street isnt this massively positive thing for the city though

I think you're missing the point. why would they want them to have bike lanes? they don't want them riding their bikes at all.

Oh I know. I own a bike and love to ride. These people embarrass me.
I know who called BRPD. They were one of the people in the business report article

No but it's is a start to move this city in the right direction. More bike lanes throughout the city is better quality of life, through property values, less traffic, etc.
Also, didn't mean to insinuate that you thought it was a negative.

what is the point of a bike lane if people are going to fricking park in it?
if the bike lane stays, the residents should be ticketed for parking in it
if the bike lane is removed, nobody should bitch when bikes are riding in the car lanes again
who is it that doesn't want to share the road again?
The problem is that there isn't anywhere for people to park if they have company over, a party or are having work done on their house.. The street isnt setup for one or the other. The street needs to be shared by both residents and bikers.

I think the vast majority of cyclists you meet would say this is all they are asking for. If you eliminated all bike lanes and had an environment where they could safely coexist, I don't think there would be a huge demand for a bike lane.

Bike lanes are a privilege not a right on city streets.
Yeah...or they are an incentive to, you know, get fewer cars on the road. It's not about "privilege", it's about making the city better. You attitude, which is shared by the vast majority of BR residents, is part of the reason why BR continues to be a craphole.
quote:
Instead of carefully maneuvering around residents' cars they demand that residents be ticketed.
If a car was parked in a lane where traffic is supposed to flow, I'm sure you would be pissed and want that car ticketed and moved so that you can get by. Or I'm sure you'd be ok with "carefully maneuvering" around that car.
quote:
Many bikers have an arrogant attitude of entitlement.
I won't argue with that, but that has nothing to do with bike lanes.
quote:
When I drive my car on the LSU lakes bikers are flying by endangering pedestrians and causing unsafe situations for vehicles. They act as if their bikes should always have the right of way instead of sharing the road.
It seems that the solution would be to have more dedicated bike lanes, no? Then they wouldn't be in your way or have to swerve around runners. They shouldn't be riding recklessly, but adding bike lanes solves a lot of these problems.

FYI I ride a bike and have ridden it on Glenmore though I wouldn't consider myself a "cyclist". It shouldn't be difficult to maneuver around a homeowner vehicle on Glenmore without crying to the police and creating this situation. If bike lanes are removed the entitled cyclists did it to themselves.

is the road wide enough to put the smallest allowable lane, then the smallest allowable bike path, then the smallest allowable on-street parking?
kinda like this

Have you been to other cities that attract young people?

If you think riding a bike in BR is a smart idea then you obviously aren't very intelligent

It's a fine idea if you have the infrastructure to keep cars and bikes separate and safe. But you have to start somewhere with adding bike lanes to existing streets.

Can't really blame the residents. I'd hate to have a bike lane in front of my home too. Makes having guests over difficult.

sure have. i've also witnessed more than 1 person i know roll over the top of a car on baton rouge streets because someone wasnt paying attention. you cant convince me riding a bike around the majority of this city is a good idea. bike lanes are not fixing that
