NOLA
This is a big hit for LaPlace
376 workers were laid off Monday from Bayou Steel, a LaPlace steel mill, according to a report from WWL-TV.
Parish President Natalie Robottom told the television station that the company is shutting down. She called it a "complete shock."

Not to politicize this... but I thought those steel tariffs had hiked prices and made things better for domestic steel companies??? I remember talking to my buddy about a year ago who was in the business and he said prices spiked right after Trump announced those tariffs.
So I guess they've gone back down? Or is this just a case of this mill's production being consolidated into another facility?

Please save your "blame JBE" / "Blame Trump tarrifs" for the political talk board.
This stinks. These are good jobs that aren't easily replaced.

Uh oh
JBE created 1000 jobs in the last 12 months, and now he just lost over a third of them.
But we have a 500 million dollar surplus!!!

The tariffs make certain types of steel more expensive to import now. We used to do a good bit of business with them

Well in "the best economy in the last 50 years." I'm sure they won't be out of work for long.

good friend was one of them laid off.

The city of LaPlace will be laying off dozens in government because they relied on Bayou Steel taxes to spend freely. The property taxes are also going to fall because housing prices are going to go south because the demand will be missing. Huge huge hit economically.

They also owe tons of money to suppliers, not surprisingly.

USA buildings shut down last month, closed steel fab plants in AL and TX.

Well, since La. is the only state currently losing jobs, it just makes sense that a steel company was going to cut its losses from a state that didn't raise taxes to prop up their economy after the Trump tax breaks.
And with dumb crossover Republicans still planning on voting for JBE, this company wasn't going to wait around on the slim possibility of canning him.

They still have the black SUVs on I-10. They just need to double down on patrols and start writing for 75 in a 70.
