Baton Rouge Magnet High leads the state in national merit semi finalists

Baton Rouge Magnet High has 28 semifinalists, the most of any school in the state. That’s a big jump from the 10 semifinalists the school had last year. Baton Rouge Magnet is followed by Haynes Academy For Advanced Studies in Metairie with 20 semifinalists, same as it had last year.
For the New Orleans area, other schools with many semifinalists are Jesuit High with 16, Ben Franklin High with 14 and Patrick F. Taylor Science And Technology Academy with 10.

Other BR schools:

Catholic High has 11 semifinalists while Episcopal High and St. Joseph’s Academy had six each.
Why is Episcopal slacking?

I don't know the answer to your question op. But I wonder how many OT baws would rather send their kid to Episcopal and pay the money (tuition and prop taxes) versus send their kid to BRMH for free (except prop taxes) giving them a better chance to be a national merit semi finalist.

BR Magnet kids were kind of odd when I was in High School. Smart but odd.
Which is better than Redemptorist used to be. They were just odd without being smart.

I would have liked to have gone to Redemptorist so I could swing by Tony's for some seafood balls and a hot plate lunch each day.

All else equal I don’t think there are many who WOULDN’T choose to send their kids to Episcopal.
I’m a BRHS alumni, but that was a long time ago. My mother was a single mother who could never have afforded to send us to private school.
I’ve heard that today Baton Rouge High has a quota for black and/or will prefer black over white given same academic scores?
I want to know if there is any truth to this?

We probably should call it “BR High” because Baton Rouge has given magnet destination to pretty much every school. Woodlawn…Bellaire…everyone now has a magnet school under this mayor.

Jesuit has been slacking big time

All the kids I know from BRMHS are weird. I wouldn't send my kid to be educated by Episcopalians though. Looks like it's Catholic schools or nothing.
Don't downvote me you weird Knight bastards

With a class size of approximately 100 students, Episcopal’s percentage of semi-finalists is on par with large schools that have higher enrollments.

My HS had one in the early 2000s

This. Episcopal has way much more to offer as well.

If you were in any sort of financial need and you felt you wanted to send your child to Episcopal I suspect you would easily be able to receive financial aid.

I agree. The student experience at BRH vs EHS are extremely different. Especially if your kid plays sports. At EHS you can play sports and get a traditional high school experience while also having high academic standards. I say this as a BRH graduate.

But at least they had a football team. Any kid who goes to a HS with no football team is going to be odd.

Kind of easy to get so many of those when you have your pick of all the quality students in the parish. Still gotta teach them but they can effectively draw from every public school student in the parish plus a number of private school students who would transfer if they got into a great public as opposed to a HS that costs more than a college.
As far as Episcopal goes, some classes are stronger than others. One class may not be good academically then about 25% of the next class are semi-finalists or some other level of honored student.

I don't have a dog in this fight but Episcopal has probably less than half the student population as Catholic and St. Joe's.
U High is the real one slacking with only one.

Baton Rouge High having pretty much all sports but football, basketball and baseball has always been weird.

Every BR High kid I've met has been weird, except maybe one. All smart, but all weird
Just saying

Mandeville best deal in the state
6 Semifinalists (same as Episcopal) and yet it’s free and has a real high school environment unlike BR High
