BATON ROUGE — A 27-year-old mother was arrested Wednesday after her children were found barefoot and filthy wandering in their neighborhood.

Ladaisha Perkins was booked into Parish Prison on three counts of cruelty to a juvenile.

Police said they learned from video and witness statements that the kids left the apartment on Scholars Avenue off North Ardenwood Drive about 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 14, Perkins’ arrest affidavit said.

Two of the children are two-years-old. They wandered over to a storm drain and tried to climb down into it, the affidavit said.

The kids were wandering in the street for about 10 minutes before apartment staff saw them and got them to safety. Police found the children in dirty clothes and covered in feces and urine, the affidavit said.

Police went to their apartment, but found the door barricaded. Perkins came downstairs to answer the door after they called out to her from outside. Police said it appeared she had been sleeping and she thought the children were in their room, the affidavit said.

Inside the house, police found overflowing trash and saw that eggs had been tossed around the kitchen and living room of the apartment.

Perkins remained in Parish Prison Friday with bond set at $15,000, jail records show.
