People are so fricking stupid. If the flag is red and you go in anyway, sorry but you should forfeit your right to be rescued. Dumbasses are dying and killing rescuers every year.

While I don't really disagree, there are a lot of areas on the beach where flags aren't visible. The area where this happened is kind of like that. But still, any reasonably intelligent person can get knee deep in the water and tell how rough the surf is going to be, and it should be even more obvious if there are storms in the area like there were last night.

Prayers to his family. It seems like we have a few of these stories every summer from Gulf Shores/Orange Beach to Panama City Beach where people go into the water during inclement weather and then drown or someone attempting to rescue them drowns. It’s one of those situations where people truly believe it can’t happen to them and unfortunately, this time it resulted in the loss of life of someone forced to go into the water to try to rescue them.

I won't even go in on yellow flag. shite even blue or whatever color it is for best conditions I'll maybe go waist deep and then spend the entire time yelling at my kids to get closer to shore. I have to get a little drunk to relax at the beach. Otherwise all I worry about is riptide or sharks Not too drunk, just a buzz.

Beach vacations may not be the best idea for you. I would not like a vacation that stressed me out the majority of the time. I guess to each their own.

This is true, and out in the Ft. Morgan area, there also aren’t very many lifeguards. Other than 3 or 4 condos/resorts, the Ft. Morgan area is mostly houses. It’s also not part of Gulf Shores (other than having Gulf Shores mailing addresses), so they don’t provide any lifeguards or beach flags to that area.

My family and I stay out in the Ft. Morgan area every summer. I make sure to check the rip current forecast from the National Weather Service office in Mobile daily. You can also look at the Gulf Shores, AL website and see what flag they’re flying each day, and there’s a good bet surf conditions will be the same in the Ft. Morgan area. Common sense measures can keep people safe. Of course, the people going into the water during bad weather usually aren’t blessed with common sense.

Martinique and The Beach Club are the only 2 places in Ft Morgan that I know of that fly flags. Kiva Dunes might, but I've never been to the beach there so not real sure. All 3 of those places are a long way from where this happened though. It happened right across from where the marina and Tacky Jack's are.

That’s a damn shame. Don’t go into the ocean if you’re not a strong swimmer it’s common sense. I bet the drowning people fought the deputy who was trying to help, it’s a fight or flight reaction. I hope the deputy’s family is well compensated.

Knee deep and let it rip.

Screw that. I just go sit down where the waves are finishing washing up and open the flood gates. A few waves and you'll be fully clean. Most likely.

Hell with those low beach chairs, I can situate myself on the end of it and piss out the bottom leg of my shorts into the sand.

They have stationed signs on the sign of the road the last 3-4 years warning of rip tides and have flashing signs when currents are bad. Website is also listed on the signs to check for rip currents.

The hardest thing I did in Navy boot camp was a life circle where they put strong swimmers in the middle of weak swimmers forming a circle, then you had to tread water for 15 minutes at a time.

Those frickers were going crazy, kept pushing me under and flailing about. I had to get fricking mean and tell them if they didn't calm the frick down I was going to push them under. I can't remember if they had flotation devices or were using our working blues as such, just remember them being uncontrollably panicked.

Another thing that drove me nuts, why the frick would you join the Navy and not know how to swim.

A huge number of people that join the Navy are from areas of the country where most outdoor water areas are to cold for swimming year round, unless they go to a pool and learn to swim, is not normal part of their upbringing like in the South. Several prominent Navy SEALs didn’t learn to swim until they enlisted.

Every swimmer, child and adult, should understand what a rip-tide is and how to react if caught in one.

They are so cautious now, yellow flags are just small waves.

You are way more likely to get swept out by a rip current than encountering a shark.

You ever dive a rig in the Gulf? Sharks everywhere, they are not interested in you. Same on off the beach, they are out there, you just wont have an encounter.
