I’m the video linked above, the deputy had a buoy with him. His rescuee was holding buoy with him when Deputy Smith stopped moving. May have been a heart attack.

The lesson is to not fight the current while going out and/or parallel to shore. Just float with the current and start trying to get in when current is taking you in as well.

I can remember when we would go on family vacations at Panama City Beach. We had the old “real” inner tubes (not the fake ones used today). At that time there were no flags and rip current was not talked about. We would go way out in the gulf... on past the first sandbar where is was pretty deep. Never had a moment of trouble. We were lucky.
