People will always look at a set of facts, and come to different conclusions. Our worldview is shaped by our experiences, and each of us have a different experience. Disagreement can be a good thing, and when two people or sides can work through a disagreement, they can often end up with a solution that was better than either side originally proposed.

But somewhere along the way, that changed. We decided we no longer were interested in working together to find common ground or a common solution. We decided that our interpretation of the facts was the only correct one, and that the other side not only is wrong, but must be mocked and discounted.

It started with religion, I think. Then it moved to our political leader, and then to all of us when dealing with politics. But now, it is starting to impact every part of our life.

Not only have people lost the ability to work with someone they disagree with, but they have lost the ability to think for themsleves, and the ability to independently verify things. They will believe something posted on this website, on Facebook, on Twitter, on the New York Times, whatever. They will then vigirously defend that, attacking anyone who doesn't agree with them. But when you peel back the onion a bit, you realize the person doesn't even understand WHAT they are defending. More than likely, it's #FakeNews, but they have lost the ability to realize that for themselves.

Take the masks. Doctors and medical professionals themselves are divided. Some say they work, some say they don't do anything, and a few say they are actually making things worse. Yet, those who think we should wear them think those who don't are evil and should be thrown in jail. Those who think we should wear them think those who who do are unAmerican "cucks" and are 1 minute away from worshipping Stalin and Castro.

I fear this has very real problems for the future of our society. We have some major challenges ahead of us (curing cancer, going to Mars, dealing with a changing economy, national debt, etc) that are going to require us to work together, to work with those we initially disagree with, to come up with complex solutions. Are we, as a society, capable of working together to solve those challenges?

Politics and religion tend to bring the ugly side of people...to the point we're they aren't willing to work together. Based on what you believe IN. It's the major part of why we are losing our way. We don't listen to or try to understand each other based it.

Nothing will be resolved until people see beyond political doctrine. The elephant nor the donkey have our best interests and are each about self-interest.

Good. That's precisely how society should function. People looking out for their own self interest.

We may hate other people's ideas, but they're necessary to the big picture but sometimes you have to be the adult who says "enough." It's a phony world, don't take it too serious, but don't travel in herds either.

We, as in society as a whole. As in, the vast majority of Americans.

As in, the people who seem willing to think about things rationally and work together despite disagreements, that number shrinks every day.

I have noticed this as well. It is pretty sad when Americans who happen to have a different opinion are treated as the enemy. People will side with a communist foreign government just because they disagree with a politician who is not on the same side they are.

The attitude of "become successful and destroy everyone else in the process" had become quite prominent. People will dunk and shite on anyone they deem beneath them.

It started when a group of self proclaimed elites decided they know what's best for us and everyone besides them is too stupid to make decisions for themselves.

Welcome to a world where nihilism/materialism prevail.

People dont value immaterial things anymore no matter how much lip service they pay.

They dont value character, they value the person with money who seems like they have character.

They dont value hard work, they value the person with money who seems like he worked hard.

I was born in 80 & can see how much has changed just in the way kids are raised now
We were raised to respect adults, do well in school, go to church, work hard for your family.
So many people who were raised just like I was is the total opposite in how they raise their kids, they want to be their best friend, school isn’t a big deal never go to church but push their faith on others,

I blame social media

I mean we are fighting genetics in a way. Tribalism used to be a great evolutionary defense, but now it's counterproductive since we have developed society way faster than the rate of evolution.

We are answering questions that only have come up now that we have hypercivilized oursleves. Mother Nature doesn't have a plan for us.

Things appear bad only because the human brain will always find new stressors once survival is secured.

These are all first world problems, and a sign of a successful society.

There are plenty of people that fall somewhere in between on the examples you listed.

A good portion of people don't really give a shite what other people do or believe as long as it doesn't impact them.

Using the extreme ends of the spectrum as a measuring stick is a terrible idea.

I mean we live in a time where a 20-minute conspiracy video is more popular and taken more seriously than evidence-based research. Do people even really fact check anymore before they post or share some BS on a major social media site?

Honestly, it all went to shite when social media got big enough to give people who have no business leading the masses an unchecked platform.

To get to the big picture, you have to be willing to work with those who may not initially agree with you. That's where we are struggling at the moment.

The big picture is made up of tons of smaller pieces.

This is the natural progression when government grows so large and so powerful that it impacts every part of your life, all the time.

When one side of the society hates the society and actively tries to tear it asunder, you have what we have now.

A society totally moved by self-centered nature is not a society long for this world.

The ideal society is a society where people FREELY choose to do good things.
