This is what happens when your evidence-based research turns out to be rather spectacularly incorrect.

When people lose faith in the experts, they begin to look elsewhere.

Probably by design.

We are headed toward a technocracy. This lockdown s a small window into that world. It will be a dark and troubling new dark ages.

Media is absolutely turning neighbor on neighbor. Social media exacerbates it.

I used to think some tragic, horrific, life-altering event (like nuclear war or a massive asteroid or a pandemic that kills tens of millions) might be the only thing that could shake us up and get us to work together again.

Now I fear such massive event would just be used as fuel to "blame" the other side and further drive us apart.

And many experts have rightfully earned their distrust.

A lot of the time it isn't incorrect. But gets disseminated in a magazine or newspaper with journalistic twist. People also fail to recognize that a small study that hasn't even been replicated should be taken as just that. That's not on the researcher, it's on the consumer of the information to know what they're actually consuming.

The left's politics is their religion

The right's politics involves their religion.

So, you've got right wing folks who also practice religion against left wing folks that eat, breathe, and sleep liberalism as a religion.

its not going to ever stop

It makes me laugh when people think people on the right are all nutty evangelicals.

It's not even close to true.

But this time it was.

So you get the rise of conspiracy theories, and the people who turn to them.

And each time this happens, trust in experts is further erroded.

I'm not disagreeing that blame also resides in the media, because it most certainly does. But if you want people to trust experts, it doesn't help when the experts frick it up. And then get busted violating the same restrictions they insisted were necessary based on their expert work.

We were raised to respect adults, do well in school, go to church, work hard for your family.

I was born in 80 as well. My parents were very young when they had me, and we never had a lot (they worked very hard but were somewhat uneducated). We had, depending on the day, just enough to get by, or just less than enough to get by (I finally realized why several times a year, I would come home from school and the lights wouldn't come on).

But they taught me respect of adults and others, working hard, etc. They were most certainly not my friend.

I see others our age who treat their kids the way you describe. But I also see them trying to live a life in a way to impress others, and I see them living a life in which it appears they are never happy. Everyone wants to put their best face forward on social media, so you are lead to believe their life is perfect. And so when you compare your own imperfect life, you fall short, and people can't handle that. So, they live a life chasing the unattainable and fake perfection, and miss the good they already have.

Yeah, a lot of the "bad" science is misinterpretation.

Even the Covid predictions that were based on NO preventative measures being taken get thrown around as if no preventative measures were taken by the same people complaining about how severe the preventative measures were.

There are plenty of people that fall somewhere in between on the examples you listed.

A good portion of people don't really give a shite what other people do or believe as long as it doesn't impact them.

Using the extreme ends of the spectrum as a measuring stick is a terrible idea

Do you think the extremes are growing? I do.

Because many people have lost faith in institutions, which is a good thing. Unequivocal faith in fallable humans even in science is a recipe for disaster. As long as humans are involved, it will have flaws. Everything should be questioned.

People are restless, unfulfilled, afraid of their own shadow. They'll believe any comforting fable to escape their own responsibility.

The "evidence-based research" you describe is harder and harder to find. Research is funded specifically to produce a desired outcome these days, and more and more academic positions solely exist due to these research dollars.

Edit: Getting downvoted by the professors, I see. LOL.

No. People don't want to learn or be challenged, they want confirmation of whatever they already believe. And other people have figured out that giving it to them is a sure way to acquire wealth and/or power. Both sides do this, and I have no doubt they laugh about it. Do you think Hannity, Limbaugh,or Maddow; Trump or Biden, actually care about the people they claim to be speaking for?

The poliboard gets a lot of well deserved hate, but there are other sites on the opposite side of the fence that are every bit as toxic.

Politicians make poor decisions using science. It doesn't mean the science is all wrong.

Don't confuse people blaming political decisions on those who deny basic realities.

Kinda? I think there has been some growth in the extremes, but I think it looks like there's been massive growth because technology and social media has basically given everyone a bullhorn and anonymity to hide behind. Couple that with with the fact the most extreme have always been the loudest ones in the room and here we are.

But was it? If we're talking about predictions, it was based on models and previous pandemics if no measures at all were taken. Science often adjusts based on variables. It's not a static thing (something else people don't understand apparently) and never has been.

I also think there's something to be said about who we're "elevating" as experts.
