re: Are we, as a society, losing our way?

Yet they still released their report, and still stood by that report while recommending lockdowns. Which the primary scientist promptly ignored.
People expect "do as I say, not as I do" from their politicians to some extent (sadly enough). They don't expect it from the leading scientist of a report that the world based their response on.

Even the older research had those discussions. Like I said, it just wasn't disseminated as such to the general population. Who sadly, weren't properly taught how to really read research and determine for themselves what is/isn't valid.
It is an interesting discussion that maybe things like that should be of greater significance in K-12 education.
Science produces 125 page reports full of data, charts, and clearly specifies in the opening executive summary that this data is highly variable and subject to change.
Media disregards the title of report, and a 23 year old editor who two weeks ago was a blogger, reads first half of first page of 125 page report, doesn't know what they are looking at, finds a few key words and make a headline.
Everyday people read the headline, read maybe half the story, and never go read the actual report.
Tech people like scientists have relied on media to translate complicated subjects into simpler to read stories for us laypeople. The media not only has become absolutely dumber, but they also have become completely pre-disposed to an opinion.
The entire chain is rotten.

not every thing is black and white, though. Information on religion and politics is an example. It isn't as simple as salt being sodium chloride or something like that. There's plenty of nuanced subjects that some folks would consider opposing viewpoints (that are not necessarily wrong, just different) as being bad information.

You are right. People change their core values all the time. We are creatures of change.

But your passive aggressiveness here kind of brings up the OPs point.
You're acting very insecure here.
Everyone, including you acts on their self interest over society, which is how the world should work. As humans, from Bush dweller to medical professional, its what we do.

I am just telling you what's happening, knowing full well that you specifically, and others generally are unable to process what you are seeing. There are those who want to CONSERVE America and those who want to REPLACE America. It's a contest between a Constitutional America and a post-Constitutional America. This plays out tens of thousands of times a day all over our media and culture.
Let me give you a significant cultural moment that you will undoubtedly mock as you have been programmed by your culture to do. When I was a kid there was an Institution called The Boy Scouts. If you wanted to refer to somebody as a straight-laced guy who exuded integrity, you called him " a real boy scout". The ultimate "boy scouts" were FBI agents,-who personified integrity.
Tell me what has become of these venerable American Institutions over the last two decades? Who took them down? Are they better than they were before? What have we replaced them with? Does their decline get us further from being a "high trust society" and closer to a "low trust society"? Is your faith in law enforcement, the Rule of Law, media, academia, the banks, the Fed, government schools, the IRS, our intelligence services, Big Tech etc increasing or decreasing?
Now multiply that times 1000, and understand that there is not a single American tradition, principle, ideal or Institution that is not under attack from The Professional and Cultural Left. As well, as the larger Establishment parties which includes both Democrats (primarily) and Republicans (significantly). We are told they are ALL rotten to the core, and must be replaced by whatever Leftist Fever Dream Solution infinite Leftist interest groups demand.
Now make a reactionary dismissive comment and downvote.

I'll ignore the rest of your post because it has nothing to do with my question and rather just your typical response that lacks all self awareness

Billy Madison warned us. But we weren't listening...

I remain stunned people can't or won't see this for what it is. Choosing either side is basically choosing both sides. It's designed for us to fight each other not for Congress to collectively fight for all of us.

I had no expectation you would or even could grapple with the answer to the question you asked me. You couldn't be less intellectually curious or more of a lightweight. You are whatever your popular culture wants you to be. A boy of his day.

While you are absolutely correct, I have come to the conclusion that the donkey's try to force the elephants to carry an excessive workload, all for the donkey's benefit. They really don't care if the elephant gets sick or dies. In fact the donkey's seem to relish that outcome.

I'm not. I'm just elaborating on my point compared to yours.
Once again, this brings up the OPs point pretty clearly. Your retort is that I'm insecure. I'm not. I'm just calling you on trying to go after me personally over a dissenting opinion.

To a degree. But it's a blanket assumption that people only work for their self-interest. Case in point, I continue to social distance and wear a mask when out. I feel like I've read enough research that supports me doing that to help protect others if I'm asymptomatic. If I was working in my own self-interests, I'd go out without either because I'd likely (statistically) not have a bad case of COVID-19 and suspect I've already had a mild case.
We do things all of the time that isn't in our own self-interest but potentially better for society as a whole.

Tribalism usually ties you to the least common denominator. We all have some tribalism in us, but keeping the circle small is the best route.
The US has become too big and diverse to be governed by two parties, much less one government.

We lost allowing people to be held accountable for their actions. All the other stuff is true but it’s roots are accountability. Not allowed to make the weird kid feel weird anymore. Now they career frick ups can find other frick ups and convince themselves their position isn’t their fault. Everyone is expected to have what anyone they envy has instead of what they worked/planned/born into having.
