Im more concerned about the people believing politicians and hiding behind science.

If you truly accept the scientific opinion as the one to wholly follow, the entire country should have been locked down with force. But we accept some tradeoffs.

That's not denying the science.

There's been a lot of denying science though. Or at least the notion that predictions can and will change as variables change.

I don't have an issue with those who see the science but say we also have to account for other factors when making decisions. I'm talking about people who are claiming it's outright wrong because variables changed.

It's also been a bit ridiculous that people have used static thinking for a novel virus that we are daily learning new things about.

We have access to more information than ever, however much of its bad information. We have increasingly divergent views as a result.

Human nature remains the same. Civilizations rise and fall, they have triumphs and failures. America is currently on a cultural slide. It can get better or worse. It’s mainly based on the self loathing that accompanies affluence. Endless “ white people problems “, “ the struggle is real “ and “Karen’s”. And it is powered via social And mass media So that it feels to anybody paying attention that we are cannibalizing our own culture.

In a nutshell we have people who want to preserve American traditions, principles, ideals and Institutions and we have people that want to transform American traditions, principles, ideals and Institutions. And what we see is the tension between those who want to conserve and those who want to destroy and replace.

How do you determine what is bad information?

I don't see this as a problem.

We as a society have a problem with excepting the answer "We just don't know". They would've been roasted just as hard for saying that. We see it all of the time when research is disseminated to the public.

I know, I just wanted to post that but I don't think that way. It's definitely trending that way, Because when you start putting societal concerns over your own, you might be labeled a socialist.

What are the positives? They are hard to find.

Probably because some scientists politicized and were overly dramatic in their outcomes.

"Denying science" has become a social media term like racism that's overused to get the upper hand in an argument without having to deal with the real material issues.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. I think it's as much about people not really understanding research and how/when it's applicable.

But I also think media plays a big part in that because they don't understand it either.

I get it. But disagreeing with the political reactions isn't "anti science."

The problem is, if we never had any lockdowns or restrictions at all, what would the real numbers have turned out to be? We will never know. We don't have any baseline to measure the accuracy of the predictions, nor the true net impact of our actions.

The problem is two-fold. I believe in moderation in all things, including politics, which just means I end up pissing off everyone else who seems to be at one end of the spectrum or the other. With everything so polarized nowadays no one is willing to buck either extreme and instead, rush to back "their side."

The other issue is the internet which gives a platform to every theory out there, both vetted and non. Anyone with a search engine can pull up an article to back their point of view. We've forgotten how to trust in the scientific method of peer-reviewed and vetted research. Just because someone has a bunch of letters after their name doesn't mean their research or theory should be taken as gospel UNTIL it is independently confirmed. It also shouldn't be discounted for the same reason.

tribalism isn't all bad FWIW

someone finding their tribe, or niche in life, can be very beneficial, and this is absolutely easier today with the internet

has there ever been a point in US history where this wasn't the case though?

and I also like how you framed the other side "destroy and replace"

But the "we don't know" would never have made it to the public, because the study would never have happened if the scientists were being honest about their abilities and data available.

The days of science for science's sake are dead. And have been for a while. Money rules scientific research just as much as it rules the corporate world.

And people are realizing this more and more every day.

ETA: I'm not make a prescriptive statement with this, just a descriptive one.

Well, when it's your job on the line, I guess that's human nature. Unlike government workers, they don't get paid if they don't work.

A scientist or group of scientists more interested in the truth would never have based on the above.

Correct. They need to eat, and took the job that pays them.

I got autocorrected. But thanks.

Why would it be good to not accept the answer from scientists that they just don't know? Looking at decades of evolving research, we've had years of searching for answers because we didn't know.

That doesn't mean they can't continue to search for the answer. It just means sometimes we really just don't know.
