My son took Algebra II his freshman year

How'd that work? I was in the advanced math track and took Algebra 1 8th grade, Geometry 9th, then Algebra 2. This was also over 20 years ago

We’re gonna punish Jacob who has a 4.0, will make a positive difference in society, has responsible, married parents to waste money on Tyrell who has a 1.2 gpa, a single mom with 5 kids, and won’t make it past a semester? frick this.

If you can’t hit a 20 on the ACT, you’re going to have a really hard time in college.
Gonna have to disagree with that, honestly. I scored above a 20 on ACT. However, to this day I still don't know how to do half of the math section on that test, from what I remember. Additionally, I know people that scored much much higher than a 20 (27+) who have since failed or dropped out of college. Also, college is obviously heavily based on what you major in. If you major in something STEM related you college will be much harder. However, if you major in something like English or another humanity type major, its going to be a lot of writing and reading etc. But the ACT is a cummulative score of like 4 sections (i think?) with all of those topics. So if you struggle with math and science but excel in reading & writing, the individual scores will reflect that but the overall ACT score will not.

Basically, I don't think a standardized test is going to determine how well someone will do in college.

But I'd say at least move the GPA requirements up to like a 2.8 or something

My golden retriever could get a 2.8 in some of the state's public schools.

A 20 is just barely above what you get simply for taking the test.

Your post would make more sense if the requirement was 25+. You're also using outliers to make your case. It's like the people that say BMI is dumb because it doesn't work for pro athletes.

Isn’t the point of TOPS to keep the best students in state?

You take away that incentive and kids that come from means will have even less reason to stay.

This term gets thrown around a lot, but the reason this country is going to shite is the whole concept of investing has been abandoned

I'll solve the state budget and this problem all in 1 go.

STOP THE TOPS PROGRAM! Too many people who shouldn't be going to college are using it!

At least, change the program to a 4 year forgivable loan that is forgiven after completion of a degree and 3 year of paying income tax in Louisiana.

Love this. Even though it could screw me over. Tired of government handouts of any kind.

I believe it’s been proven to be the best single indicator actually.

Remember there was a thread not too long ago that Biden was threatening to cut the GI Bill

What's funny is there were some politicians looking at cutting Pell Grants which would help some of those students she feels are left out by TOPS

Yep and it's a damned shame that even came up.... I knew plenty blue collar kids from up north, who for them was the SOLE reason they signed up. The want something for nothing class is devouring us.

Shouldn't the title read, "Is TOPS going to..." TOPS is the name of a program, therefore it should be treated as singular, not plural.

All GPAs are not created equal. I don’t give a shite if you have a 3.5 from some ghetto arse thug school. Give me the kid with a 3.0 from zachary high or one of the good high schools in st. Tammany or ascension.

Minimum ACT should be a 23. A 20 is a fricking joke.

To get the bare minimum TOPS, you better have a 3.0 GPA AND a 23 on the ACT and none of that super score bullshite where you take the ACT 4 times and just focus on one section each time.

The composite score is an average of the 4 sections. If you really excel at Reading/English, those scores should be high enough to bring your average up to a 20, unless by "excel" you mean a 22 or something

ETA: also there are "classes" that you can take that help with test taking strategy for the ACT. Apparently those are good enough to bring your score up a few points.

Well, the BMI scale is stupid and outdated. But that's a conversation for another day.

my son is a junior and he just took the ACT a few weeks ago for the 1st time..24 Composite, 26 Math, 27 Science, 24 English and 20 Reading....his goal is a 30 composite..anything over that would be even better. It's a good start...he can easily improve Math, he just needs to work on English and Reading...

There are plenty of college grads coming out of Louisiana schools. There's just a scarce few employers for them.

Unfortunately that's an area the state hasn't really figured out.

Then why was there an income cap in the first two iterations of the plan?
