23 of my classmates went LSU after graduation. All of us had 3.5 GPA or greater. We all had 27 or greater on the ACT. Out of that 23 only 3 of us graduated. Our valedictorian did not go to college (she married an oil field baw). The co- valedictorian dropped out after the first semester. Another committed suicide because his girlfriend dumped him. Point is that this occurred just before TOPS and I believe that a lot kids get TOPS and party for 2 semesters and then drop out and go to a job. Most is a waste, I hope I am wrong.

Well now they just go to school on our dollars then leave and never come back.

Personal anecdote here, but I would have gone to school out of state if it wasn't for TOPS. So the program did work there. After I graduated I got a job in my field with my degree in Louisiana... making shite pay. I worked there 3 years and then moved to Texas and got a job that doubled my salary doing a similar role. This was many years ago, but I think it still holds up.

Louisiana just can't compete with jobs.

Jesus Christ man. That’s his kid you’re talking about.

are you serious? The requirements are printed in black and white. Almost any degree worth going to get is going to require college trig. If his kid isnt smart enough to take trig or advanced math in HS he isnt smart enough to go to college, atleast not with someone else paying for it.

When I was in HS 20 years ago these things were known. and it was pretty simple, you had two college prep tracks

track 1 was AP kids

9th- Algebra 1
10- Geometry and Algebra II
11th- Advanced Math/Trig and statistics
12th- Calculus

track 2 was non AP kids and simply had you not doubling up in math as a sophmore pushing Advanced math/Trig to senior year.

for science its real simple

9th- physical science
10th- biology
11th- chemistry
12th- physics

Pretty much every college bound student should be able to pass all of those classes with atleast a B except maybe calc and physics and those are not needed for TOPS.

My kids are doing algebra in 2nd grade now. granted its a private school vs the public I went to, but they will take Algebra II and geometry as a freshman. Chemistry as a sophmore. I would think it wouldnt be that hard to take one more math and one more science class in the last 2 years of HS.

Sorry is kid is not college material. And frankly he isnt a very good parent as is apparently not very involved nor pushing his kid.

if that upsets you or him...who gives a frick.

my son is a junior and he just took the ACT a few weeks ago for the 1st time..24 Composite, 26 Math, 27 Science, 24 English and 20 Reading....his goal is a 30 composite..anything over that would be even better. It's a good start...he can easily improve Math, he just needs to work on English and Reading...

Jumping from a 24 to a 30 as junior is gonna be pretty tough I'd imagine. Good luck to him though.

I don't believe that is correct

It won’t be easy but he should get close. Math is by far the easiest subject for him by far. He’s taking AP Statistics this year as a Junior. No clue what he’s taking next year.

Why?

Median is literally taking all incomes, putting them in a row, and picking the one in the middle. That doesn't tell you anything other than that household makes that much.

How'd that work? I was in the advanced math track and took Algebra 1 8th grade, Geometry 9th, then Algebra 2. This was also over 20 years ago

I'm about your age and ~15-20% of my class did: Pre-alg 6th grade, Alg I 7th grade, Geometry 8th, Alg II 9th, Pre-cal/Trig 10th, Calc AB 11th, Calc BC 12th. 3 or 4 guys tested out of Geometry in 8th grade and moved everything up a year. They ended up taking Calc III at the local university senior year.

I responded to the guy that said his kid didn’t qualify saying his kid shouldn’t go to college.

The response you see is where someone called is kid a “fricking idiot”. I know this is the internet and all but you don’t have to be a dick all the time.

It’s a truer representation of how the population’s earning ability than simply average as income can go up infinitely, but can only go down so much.

The original Louisiana College Tuition plan funded by Pat Taylor was income restricted. The TOPS program replaced it in 1997 and has never been income based.

It's a measure of central tendency that is often times less skewed than using the "average" (mean).

Combined income of $150,000 isn’t tons of money with kids and bills.

i know. my point was he wasnt really being a dick. if you can not qualify for tops then you are a fricking idiot or in the case of a couple people I knew, too lazy to go take the ACT mutiple times and actually take it serious.
