No phone for you. Wonder how much you have to pay to “buy” your phone at the end after the lease?

If you are ‘leasing’ a phone, does the owner retain rights to the data and information that gets stored on the phone?

Will literally change nothing for all the women that use apple. They wont even blink an eye when theu upgrade every single device they have. Their husband wont say a word either and his wife will side eye him if he doesnt get apple for imessage.

Anyone who does this is an idiot.

Bought a 16 after using my 12 since 2020.

Why people update so frequently boggles the mind.

Klarna is for financially illiterate poor people.

People who lease phones have a different goal than people who buy phones, just like people who lease cars have a different goal than people who buy cars.

I would have to actually look at the numbers to see how they work out, but this sounds like Apple wants to take control of and simplify what has become the common “buy and trade back in” pattern.

Never used one.

I don’t really care as long as I can make phone calls, listen to music/podcasts, scroll the interwebs, and answer emails.

It’s likely there aren’t as many people participating in the upgrade program because of the minor differences in each yearly phone release.

Since you don’t own it, they also don’t owe you anything at the end and you have to pay them. This allows them to control the life cycle better and increase profits

Do people even update that frequently?

I feel like that went away many years ago.

Last time I upgraded I traded in my 4 year old iphone and got like 75% of the cost of a brand new iPhone.

I am sure there are still those types, but you are probably right in that it has died down as innovations have died down.

They give very little for buyback now.

I got pretty much nothing on my trade in.

I just did my upgrade less than 2 years ago. Traded in a 12 pro max and got like 650 or something similar.

Rebates. As long as AT&T gives me a monthly rebate on my 3 year old trade in that covers the cost of a new phone, I’ll keep getting a new phone every 3 years. After 3 or 4 years, the ‘promotional’ trade in value drops significantly, so why not take advantage and get the upgrade? At this point in my life, I’m not switching carriers, and from what I can tell, the biggest drawback is that if you cancel service, you have to pay the balance due on the phone.

Way back in the time of home phones, didn't we all lease them from AT&T?

I don’t disagree. And again, the numbers may not make sense. But as someone who generally keeps their phone long enough (usually 4ish years) to both “get their money’s worth” and result in the trade in value being next to nothing, I would at least be willing to run the numbers.

Or I could keep adding to the stack of pristine condition old smartphones sitting on the shelf
