So the key is always transmitting.

You put it in a Faraday cage to prevent theft.

If you want to use it, you have to remove it from the cage and the signal can be stolen.

If you leave it in the cage forever, you might as well not have it.

The problem, again, is using the key, because any time you use it you take a risk.

How did they get in my garage though?

Explain to the folks at home what exactly that means.

A "Faraday cage" is actually a thing. When you are inside a metal cage (like an elevator) the fact that the cage conducts eletricity means that you are shielded from outside eletrical sources.

This is why when you are on board an airliner (or a car) you are basically immune from lightning. You're inside a metal cage that conducts the electricity around you.

Also why you lose cell service when you step inside an elevator.

So putting a key fob inside a metal pouch makes sense if you're worried about having random thieves monitoring eletrical key fob signals. Why you'd worry about that actually happening is a topic for a different thread though, most car thieves will opt for low-tech solutions such as a hammer to break the window.

Lol, there's more guys on TD that leave their keys in their trucks/ in their ignition than there are that would use this pouch.

Holding my hand up. I have insurance to take care of anything, so IDGAF.

Most stolen cars are scrapped the same day. There are 3-4 yards in the area that will take a car and crush it with no title.
Once it's crushed and shredded that's all she wrote.

The most valuable items to steal are truck tailgates and rims.
Stereos don't have a resale market like they used to.

So what I'm getting at. Is there really isn't a way to stop a determined thief.

This happened to my gf. I know for a fact that we locked her car when we got out. Came back the next day, and the doors weren't all of the way closed. Perps just went through the car, and since it is a convertible, we leave nothing in it.

Checked the apartment cams, and sure enough, two guys walked up, hit some type of clicker, and the lights went off like they hit the normal key fob.

The area has been having a lot of car break-ins lately, but you can't do that much about it since it is in New Orleans

No, and that's why we have insurance.

I can't live my life thinking people are trying to boost my car by stealing the signal from the keys in my pocket. I choose to just carry on living my life

You can't do anything about it anyway, so no reason to worry

My old 4Runner I used to leave the car unlocked with keys under the seat.

Can't do that with my new ride and the push start, they'd be able to just sit in there and press Start without even knowing where the keys were

So my defense against car thieves is that I've stopped leaving my car unlocked with the keys in it. Big step for me

Friend still in New Orleans drives very old cars that don't look like much. His aged van has been stolen twice and the farthest it got from his place was four blocks. It has a lot of idiosyncrasies. His other car is a stick shift.

Why would a spare in your truck do this?

im not sure i understand your question.

if someone smashes my window and pushes the start button, my truck will start. bye bye truck

if the key is in a pouch, it will not start and they will probably assume there is no spare inside. they would have to find the pouch's hiding spot and take the key out to be able to start the truck and drive off.
