Just wondering if some of the Carbon Monoxide accidents (some fatal) have been caused by key activations from outside the home?

My feeling is that if someone wants my shite that badly and is willing to go to much greater lengths to steal it than I'm willing to take to protect it, they can have it. Bag or no bag, they'll probably find a way. I'll file a claim and get a new one.

So the key is always transmitting.

Not exactly. Think of it this way.

The key fob is loud and annoying. It's got one volume: Wake the dead, but it can't hear too well. The car is kind of quiet and reserved. It's also got only one volume, but it's the polar opposite of the key fob, so you can barely hear it, but it hears great.

Now, when you push the button on the key fob, the key fob screams out "UNLOCK THE DOOR FOR THIS a-hole" and the car can hear it really well, so it unlocks the door. This is why you can unlock your car door from 100 feet away or from inside your house when you push the button. If your car is equipped with proximity door unlocking where you don't have to do anything but walk up to the car, when you reach for the handle, the car kinda whispers to the key fob, 'Hey, are you there? Should I unlock the door for this a-hole?' and the key fob screams back "HELL, YEAH! UNLOCK THE DOOR FOR THIS a-hole!" and the car unlocks the door.

Now, the idea is that the car whispers so low and the key fob hears so poorly that if the key fob is more than about five feet away and someone tries to open the door, the key fob never hears the car asking if it should open the door, the key fob never screams back, and the car door remains locked. Now, you might start to see how the exploit works. Someone walks up to the car with a megaphone and tries to open the door. When the car whispers to the fob, "Hey, are you there? Should I unlock the door for this a-hole?", the megaphone the thief has amplifies and blares out the question. Now, the question is so loud that the key fob can hear it from far away and through walls. When it hears the question it screams out like it usually does at its usual volume, "HELL YEAH, YOU UNLOCK THAT frickING DOOR FOR THAT a-hole". The car, with its good hearing picks up the okay to unlock the door and the thieves are in.

If your car doesn't have proximity sensing on whether or not the key fob is actually in the interior of the car, they can use a similar attack to start the engine and off they go. If your car does sense whether or not the key is in the passenger compartment, then they may have difficulty starting the car or keeping the car running after they drive off and get far enough away from the fob that the car and the key fob can no longer talk to each other, but anything in the car is still fair game and really is the much safer thing for the thief to go after. If they move that car one inch, that's theft of a motor vehicle and if it's worth more than $1500, that's up to 10 years in Angola. If they just rob $1500 of stuff from the interior, that's way less risk.

The bag is akin to a soundproof booth you stick the key fob in so it never hears the car, even if the thieves use a megaphone.

It's a little more complicated than that, what with radios and crypto engines and whatnot, but that's the basic gist of the attack and how the bag fits in.

Its about $10 for the amplifier on Ebay.

Apparently this is a growing issue in Great Britain right now and car manufacturers are being slow to respond.

Also, a few cars in NOLA have been stolen in the last week and this is the leading theory.

This happened to my gf. I know for a fact that we locked her car when we got out. Came back the next day, and the doors weren't all of the way closed. Perps just went through the car, and since it is a convertible, we leave nothing in it.

Checked the apartment cams, and sure enough, two guys walked up, hit some type of clicker, and the lights went off like they hit the normal key fob.

The area has been having a lot of car break-ins lately, but you can't do that much about it since it is in New Orleans

This happened because you pissed off your neighbor.

It was off of Frenchman. No mf'ing way I'd live in that shithole of a city. I don't even go there unless I have to.

Apartment mgmt said they'd been having multiple break-ins over the weeks prior to that incident. Perps weren't stealing the cars, just taking stuff inside if them.

There's really nothing you can do about it. NOPD sure as shite won't care, so it's not worth the headache of even reporting it

I just started putting my keys across the room from the door when I get home. Figure 15 feet might be enough to prevent them from picking up the signal, but who knows.

Guess if someone has the time to walk around or if the equipment gets better then I may have an issue.

I use an old Crown Royal bag. Same results and it’s free since my wife leaves them all over the house.
