I lived there for 3 months in 1996... loved it. Folks are nice and it's pretty lily white.
Where we lived (camden, Rockport area) folks mostly said, "yep" instead of, "you're welcome". I thought it odd, got in some fights about it, couldn't adjust and moved away.
Wasses hotdogs are awesome. State prison in Rockland had a cool woodworking shop and store. Great food in the area.

Go find a house on a lake (Sabago would be my choice) and then commute to Portland.

Unbelievable summer weather.
Like poster indicated, winter is cold but they dress for it up there.
Blizzards are their hurricane seasons, some winters aren't as bad as others.
Portland/Freeport area is nice plus you are pretty close to a large city like Boston.
Have no idea what the cost of living is up there but from places I've been there seemed to be some reasonable housing options unless you want coastal property somewhere.

I know that Vermont is currently giving people who move there $10,000. And that's close to Maine.

You have to live in Vermont and have a remote job. It's not as simple as just moving to Vermont.

If you end up taking the job, I'd look for a place in or near Portland and do the commute to work. You won't be dealing with a lot of traffic, so it wouldn't take long to get 25 miles outside Portland, and you'd be in a place with a lot going on.
I spent a week near portland this summer. Awesome place and the weather and food was amazing.
The cold might be another thing though... Sounds awful to me. If you are young I would do it. Move... see the country. Youll love it.

My cousin lives in Portland. He absolutely loves it. He spends a lot of time outdoors and there’s plenty to do in that realm. You do have to deal with weather though

Lived in Orono, north of Bangor, for six years. Loved it. You could dump your boat into the water from a rocky beach and not see a soul.
I miss hanging by a lakeside beach with no one around, the ice fishing (get some tip ups), beaches (check out Popham beach), red hot dogs (you get used to em), lobster, clams, and mussels (lobster can get around 3 to 4 a pound around Thanksgiving), and self-reliant Mainers (brisk, but you get used to them too).
Portland is mild compared to the rest of the state, but still, buy a snowblower, you will need it.
Flights are usually pretty cheap out of the Portland jet port.
Get outside in the winter, skiing, snowmachining, fishing, it helps.
