Anyone lived in Maine?

I’ve only applied to one job in the past year, as I’m pretty satisfied with my current position as far as having to work goes...it must have been close to four months ago now, but I just got contacted to set up the initial phone interview. Job would be about 25 miles north of Portland. Just wondering if anyone had lived up there...on one hand it seems great (small towns, untapped wilderness), but on the other hand, it seems like it could get old quick (weather, New Englanders, taxes). Who knows what will even end up coming out of the interview...really just wanted to get some opinions.

Knew a couple dudes from Maine in college. They were pasty white and smoked a lot of pot. Also 40 degrees was warm to them.

Never lived there, but go there a good bit for long weekends/day trips.
Portland is an amazing town, packed with incredible restaurants and breweries. The summers and falls are unbelievable, and yes it gets cold in the winter. But not unbearably cold. You just need to know how to dress, and you'll be fine.
If you end up taking the job, I'd look for a place in or near Portland and do the commute to work. You won't be dealing with a lot of traffic, so it wouldn't take long to get 25 miles outside Portland, and you'd be in a place with a lot going on.

Good friend of mine moved to Portland from Louisiana.
They only planned on staying for 1 year for his wife's Fellowship, but they loved it so much they decided to stay.
So...that's what I got

Portland is just like BR minus the traffic, racial tension, flooding and humidity.

I'm from New England and have a house in Maine...Portland is my favorite city in the northeast, by far.
Wharf Street.

And better scenery, restaurants, breweries, education, etc.
It’s honestly nothing like BR. At all.

Watch out for the vampires and other supernatural creatures. They really seem to like it there.

all of this. I live on the east coast (NY metro), and my wife and I loved it so much we got married right outside of Portland. Really amazing place. If i wasn't in advertising (ie, need to by in NYC for work), i'd seriously consider it there.
Good luck!

I've been in that area many times. One of the most beautiful areas I've been. It felt like stepping back in time in the small town. I love Portland. Cool place. The winters would get to me I think. Summers are great but that water is COLD.

And sewer clowns. And partially buried alien spacecraft and such.

Good friend moved there.
Loves it. From western Penn so already ok with snow and cold.
You must submit to getting long underwear and both snow and rain gear.
Wetsuit for ocean.
The coastal towns = "downeast".
They elect democrats and inds.
The rest of the state is mountains, republican.

Are you interested in Vermont/are there comparable opportunities there? I'm not sure of the specifics but I did see that Vermont is paying people to move there and work remotely. Not sure what type of positions or what line of work you're in.
I have applied for a few jobs up in that region. Haven't had any luck but I'd probably consider it if I got an offer.
A friend of mine moved to Maine and loves it. I don't keep in touch with him much or know about his work, but as far as the location itself he seems happy.

I have a lovely townhouse is Kennebunkport. NIH and Paul have much more glamorous estates.

Been there a couple of times. Very beautiful. The people are......I can't really put a label on it. Different. Nice but different. Honestly I don't know how to describe the typical Mainer. Just kinda odd and hard to decipher.

Have a friend that lives there and she loves it. It's one of our top 3 places to go to when we leave Cali.
