Have you tried sincerely praying?

In recent years, I have. For me, it has not hurt, and I would say it has helped. Meditative deep praying. I'm not that big of a religious person either. But something about it helps. I hope it's because God is real and we are all special souls with an afterlife.

This ^^^. You’re not alone buddy, everyone goes through this at some point in their life. It’s very normal. I went through a pretty major existential crisis myself recently. I’m telling you, give faith a chance. There is absolutely nothing that can make sense without it. “Science this science that,” believe me, I obsessed over it for a while. After a while you’ll begin to realize that God IS the most logical explanation for all of this. There is a creator. Is he some white dude sitting on a throne with a beard? Probably not..... but he’s there. We’re on this earth and it’s OUR job to find meaning. It’s OUR job to find purpose. Nobody is going to find that for you but yourself.

Yes. And, it will lead to more drinking to mask the anxiety. I wish I had a universal answer, but I am not sure there is one. Hang in there, man. Lot of people other than me are hoping you get through this. Keep your head up, bro!

I’ve got no reason for this. In the past two years I’ve run a marathon, four half marathons, joined the 750 pound club in the gym, gotten a new job, and had more success as a musician than I’ve ever had in my life. I’ve also had a daughter and been cultivating a great relationship with my son while boosting the quality of my marriage all at the same time.

Maybe you're ignoring the real things that bring you fulfillment and peace.

Mine comes and goes in waves. Sometimes it’s a day or 2, sometimes a week. It started about a year before I separated from the military and has actually been a bit more frequent since I separated (the opposite of what I thought was going to happen). It doesn’t make much sense because I have a great life with a great family.

When it happens all I want to do is spend time with my boys and do outdoor things with them, but it’s also a time I have less patience with them which is horrible. I think it just makes me more emotional overall.

I just try to think about my family and how good I’ve got it. Recently I have tried drinking less and started running again. If that doesn’t work I might try talking to someone at the VA about it. They take that shite seriously.

Edit: Also, I have found too much coffee makes it much worse. Maybe anxiety?

Bingo

Destination happiness is an American epidemic. The idea that happiness is in the future if we mark off certain boxes, make a bunch of money, or hit a bunch of goals we will eventually attain happiness and peace

It's a false hope. Happiness is about finding meaning, not about attainment. You'll find it where you are, not some future specified time and place

Most recent was caused by a 'sleeping pill' the doctor prescribed me and didn't tell me that it was an antidepressant. Said i should only 'call in side effects if i feel like killing myself'.

I generally don't do well with antidepressants unless its multiple pills. I was starting to self isolate, fits of rage (at one point i went after my mom because she wouldn't take a pair of old worksocks to use). I was having 'black out conversations'. I would faint nightly getting out of bed. My head generally runs really fast and this shite completely shut that down. Was kinda scary. Didn't know if i had a stroke or what.
I would take my meds and lay in bed..... the next thing I know im scrubbing my shower... or a soap dish. I would be in bed and the next thing i know is im standing in the bathroom or kitchen (not doing anything just standing). I think the 'depression' was from a combination of the medication and the fact I wasnt sleeping.

When I asked the doctor for a note (that this drug could possibly cause these side effects they refused. Said that since they didn't witness the events (happening at 1-4 am) that they couldn't document it......... then......... they said they didn't know enough about the drug to know what the side effects were.

Apparently I was getting so bad that my dad considered having a gun near him. I honestly don't blame him.

Ive been drunk angry and overworked angry..... this was different level. I was depressed (but like angry and violent) and when I would snapped i couldn't stop.

A new doctor im seeing is doing test to see if the drug caused psychosis. Was not a few fun months. Glad i stopped taking that shite.

Its never to late to turn back Christ. He alone can bring you peace. You can have everything right and still be empty.

You don't need gods to help you. Look at Buddhism and Jainism (and the philosophy of Jesus minus the religion). You have the power within yourself to find peace and forgiveness.

A good starting point is to imagine yourself locked away by yourself for 100 years. Would you be comfortable being alone with your own thoughts for this amount of time? If the answer is no, then consider why. Next, start making changes to yourself so that you begin to be the type of person that you could live with.

Right view - you are an eternal being existing within the shells of your own ego.

Right intention - compassion and love, understand that others are not bad but misguided by their own layers of ego. Can they be frustrating, sure, but you should feel compassion for them instead of anger.

Right speech - learn to only say things that are constructive and not destructive (constructive does not necessarily mean nicey-nice, destructive does not necessarily mean only bad things)

Right action - make your actions as honorable as your intent, do things with love and compassion for your fellow beings and not out of desire. Hard to start, but easy once you get going.

Right livelihood - you seem to have a good life going, continue to help others but not to your own detriment. Work out and play music for the pleasure it gives you and not for the external validation that it seems you may be doing it for.

Right effort - give up any of the things that may be holding you back from the above. Simplify your life by understanding your true motives for doing things, once those motives are pure, your contentedness will increase.

Right mindfulness - as your speech and actions are clearly motivated by compassion and love, guide your thoughts to align with your new way of being.

Right concentration - you will become more focused on the things that provide contentment and your worries for the conflicts that your ego has produced will be reduced. Congrats, you are on the path to freedom of the mind.

Don't worry about the ins and outs of religious dogma, you can do this just as easily as Buddha or Jesus, the path of a thousand miles begins with a single step in the right direction.

I'm not religious and I am fine with knowing that when it's over it's over. Nature makes me feel relaxed and alive...humans came from nature and I'll be returning to it someday.

Look into stoicism. I try to read a page or two of Marcus Aurelius’s “Meditations” every night. It’s not what you think; it teaches you how to be grateful and life in the moment.

Socrates stuff is good too, especially the non-Plato stuff. It's basically Jesus with a bit of politics mixed in.
