It happened to my best friend. I knew he wasn't in the best place and struggling in some aspects of life. However he was smart, mentally and physically strong, and about to get married.
He made a couple of comments over a few months that struck me oddly. One that really stood out was how he seemingly had a connection with Robin Williams after his suicide. I simply acted the way we did, called him a giant puss and told him to suck it up. I had no idea how bad the depression was apparently.
He got married, I was in the wedding. He was happy and doing well, by all indications he had gotten through what was bothering him. 2 months to the day after he was married I got the call that he had taken his life.
Depression is a mother fricker. If it has you down, seek help. I never saw that coming from him, no one did. He was always a high energy and positive person. Very close to his family, very intelligent.
Don't try to hide it or let it pass if things get that bad, there are people out there who want to help and know how.

All Henry VIII jokes aside, divorce is a big no-no still in the Catholic Church, so no Communion without an annulment. I haven’t figured out the annulment process yet, so no communion for me. What really makes me feel so bad about it was the fact that I didn’t want a divorce. I didn’t do anything bad to deserve one like cheat or neglect or abuse. I didn’t have a say. I wanted to fight for my marriage, but she wanted to end it, so it’s over just like that.

Just a FYI, given the above and that you haven't remarried civilly, you aren't in bad standing with the Church.

Of course the Anglicans would take a soft stance on divorce

That's Funny! But no, we're not those Anglicans, Henry VIII jokes notwithstanding.

We believe like you in the sanctity and permanence of marriage but recognize the reality of circumstances such as has befallen you. We could not justify theologically, biblically, or in good conscience withholding the Body and Blood of Christ from you in the situation you described.

If you were an adulterer it'd be a different deal dealing with the Priest and our Bishop to the end of reconciling husband and wife and ultimately restoring the adulterous party to Holy Communion. But that's not your situation.

I’m just in a big funk in every phase of my life it feels like. I can see progress being made around me, but I just keep feeling worse and worse.

As I wrote earlier, Mrs M and I will pray for you regularly. Hang on. Always available if just to talk or have a wee dram of something. It only feels like you're alone. Christ is always with you although now I'm sure that seems nearly impossible to believe.

I’ve got no reason for this. In the past two years I’ve run a marathon, four half marathons, joined the 750 pound club in the gym, gotten a new job, and had more success as a musician than I’ve ever had in my life. I’ve also had a daughter and been cultivating a great relationship with my son while boosting the quality of my marriage all at the same time.

There are plenty of "reasons for this," and the things you list can never in and of themselves ameliorate it.

In fact, if you were intellectually honest about it, they would only make "it" worse because all of that is also a flash in the pan.

More late evening. Especially when it’s time for bed and sleep and I curl up in my cozy covers and it hits me that I’m going to die and blip out of existence.

I once was a devout Christian. Life was better then in some ways.

If this doesn't go away shortly, you should see a doctor.

As for religion, it is comforting to many. However, I believe it to be a false sense of security. I'd rather accept things as they really are, and as backed up by real evidence.

We are all going to die, and that's it. However, that makes life much more precious. Live it the best you can, because that's all there is. Make a difference in the lives around you, which is what teachers do. This life is what matters. Religion would have us believe that this life hardly matters, which is the opposite of the truth.

As others have said, going 100% all the time is not sustainable. You need down time to recharge and take care of yourself. You can't care for your kids if you don't take care of yourself first.

First, when it comes to death, it will happen when it happens and in most cases we really have no control over it. It took my being down and totally flatlined for 5 minutes and being brought back to truly understand it.

Depression is truly a destructive creature in that it wants to get you into a dark room by yourself and eventually kill you.

As a licensed clinician, the first thing I would advise is to have a good physical done by your physician to rule out a number of possibilities. If it is not something that is being caused by another illness, then get your physician to refer you to a good psychiatrist. They do the drugs but generally no talk therapy. Thereafter, find a good male therapist (as you are a male and need a therapist with a perspective on men's issues). If that doesn't work, then come back on here and hunt me down. I have nothing against spirituality, but Jesus and others are not always the cure and if anything have a way of masking the problem. Untreated, depression can become chronic and the condition worsen with compounded interest. First things, lay off the alcohol and illicit substances. Second thing, get to your physician fast. Good luck.

That's when panic attacks first hit me out of nowhere as well. Scarier than anything I'd experienced before. Get a good doctor or internist and if need be a therapist.

Brah it's almost certainly major depression. But I wouldn't listen to any baw diagnosis here including mine. Just go to a psychiatrist and answer the questions honestly. It's usually an hour first visit.

The psychiatrist should be able to get a pretty good hold on what's going on after the first visit. From there they'll either give you meds, refer you to a psychologist or both.

Edit: I agree with the doctor above who said go to your GP first. He will rule out hypothyroidism which can mimick depression. If he thinks it's a psych issue be sure and ask for a referral to a psychiatrist. Don't let a GP medicate you as they are not experts on the topic.

Did years back. Didn't work. Tried a couple of others that also didn't work. Currently on Wellbutrin. Not really burning the woods down with that, but it has helped me lose 36 pounds during the first half of this year (reduces compulsive behaviors - eating, smoking, etc.). Hope to have another positive loss report next week as I am aiming for another 36 for the second half of this year.

Crippling?

No.

Sudden, random bouts of depression?

Sure, but that's probably most people.

Over-introspection is not healthy.

I'm not wanting to pile on but the last part of that statement should have been the first. All that other stuff pales in comparison to the joy a child can bring to your life.

Maybe slow down and take some time away from the gym and enjoy simple, little things again.

I do hope you feel better soon.

I know it's a shitty thing to do. A close relative committed suicide in 1991 and I saw what it did to our family. Frankly, what it continues to do.

I'm hanging in there. Sincerely, thank you for your concern.
