Anyone here ever get hit by sudden and seemingly random crippling depression?

About three weeks ago it hit me that I’m going to die one day. I started thinking about how everything is finite and pretty much meaningless. Been feeling really low and down since and can’t seem to shake it. Like thanatophobia has suddenly become a thing for me.
I’ve got no reason for this. In the past two years I’ve run a marathon, four half marathons, joined the 750 pound club in the gym, gotten a new job, and had more success as a musician than I’ve ever had in my life. I’ve also had a daughter and been cultivating a great relationship with my son while boosting the quality of my marriage all at the same time.
I should be fricking ecstatic and full of life and energy but I’m honestly having a hard time getting out of bed in the morning.
I’ve got a feeling I’m just overwhelmed with stress. I go 100mph from the time I wake up until I pass out and it’s mostly just keeping up with the house, my job, and my kids. It’s relentless. And while finances are good in terms of being safe and secure, we aren’t living high by any means. Teacher salaries don’t go anywhere.
Anyways, thanks OT. I know I’ve come to the right place.

Hit me around age 38. Have the afternoon panic attacks started for you yet?

We were not meant to live like this.

More late evening. Especially when it’s time for bed and sleep and I curl up in my cozy covers and it hits me that I’m going to die and blip out of existence.
I once was a devout Christian. Life was better then in some ways.

How often do you wake up at night?
You sound like me a few years ago. I was living in a fog. Always wanted to sleep. I thought I was depressed, but it turns out that I had severe undiagnosed sleep apnea.
Can you make an appointment with your PCP? You may have depression, but it can also be diet or sleep quality.

33 and I can compartmentalize way too good.
I can go down a bad rabbit hole for a day after a week long booze bender
But when I'm exercising and working, I'm good, confident ect

Ecclesiastes 1:1–11 ESV
1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
2 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity.
3 What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun?
4 A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever.
5 The sun rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises.
6 The wind blows to the south and goes around to the north; around and around goes the wind, and on its circuits the wind returns.
7 All streams run to the sea, but the sea is not full; to the place where the streams flow, there they flow again.
8 All things are full of weariness; a man cannot utter it; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
9 What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has been already in the ages before us.
11 There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of later things yet to be among those who come after.

I want to. My best friend used to be a cynical, existential emo grump like I am right now but he started smoking weed about five years ago. Now he’s the fun guy that people gravitate to.
Not sure if it was the weed or what. If I could find a dealer I’d smoke some just to see. Never have before.
And for those suggesting alcohol.....I’m allergic to alcohol.

Nope, I always have a trigger.

Depression doesn’t frick around.
It can be hard to see what seeking help will do for you personally but as someone who has been there, thinking about how much seeking help will benefit your family is enough of a reason. Once I finally did, I was able to process how much family meant to me no matter how hard things get.
You will make it through the tough times. You can do it.
And remember, no matter how hard it gets, Anthony Bourdain killed himself.

My diet is way better than average. I’m trying to improve some habits out of hope for a six pack. Might be a nutrient deficiency. I don’t know. I did have blood work done two months ago and my vitamin levels were good.
Testosterone was low but not too low.
I’ve always had sleeping issues. I wanted to do a sleep test but my doctor said it wasn’t necessary. I didn’t have any symptoms for sleep apnea besides being fatigued.

If you're talking about it, you're not really depressed.

Good. Alcohol is terrible if you're depressed.

I am not trying to trivialize your pain or anxiety. Because I know you're hurting. And I have been there too. But I have somehow come around to finding great comfort in this idea of a meaningless existence.
I find comfort in knowing how tiny and insignificant we are in the cosmos. And I appreciate the cycle of a finite life.
Go take a walk through the streets of Paris or Rome. And see if anyone there knows who those great boulevards are named after. Generals. Mayors. Chiefs or the church, politics, or industry. No one remembers. No one cares. They're all dust.
The meaning of life is to take simple pleasures in simple tasks. Give to others. Help and encourage the ones you love. Appreciate your fleeting time. And go out with a smile.
