right, because there is a pretty widespread knowledge of what schools are available to any particular high school senior in Texas, so they don't apply where they know they will not be accepted. You have to be in the very top of your high school class to go to Texas A&M...

Outside of the official military academies, the Citadel produces the best officers on the whole. The Citadel is a true military school just like the 3 (5) US Service Academies.

LSU has an excellent ROTC program, with financial assistance available. Google "LSU Air Force ROTC" for details.

There’s no reason to not simply look at the normal schools he’d go to that also have ROTC. Do all SEC schools not have rotc?
Unless your kid is hell bent military for life, there’s no reason he shouldn’t enjoy college life first then commit to the military when he is 22. ROTC anywhere are perfectly fine programs.
You are a hell of a lot better off over committing to rotc at a place that takes it less serious than wishing you had less military commitment somewhere that takes it serious or the academy.
Eta: op you have places like North Georgia, VMI, and citadel. Probably some other great options too.

If he is not committed to the military then a lot of schools are fine. If he does want to be a military officer the better ROTC schools make a lot of sense when it comes to getting a regular commission.

To be fair that number is very deceiving because nearly 2/3 of their applicants are auto admits. Their auto admit policy you need to be top 10% of your class, or top 25% with like a 30 composite ACT, or 1360 SAT. Texas schools are getting very hard to get into, a lot of people moving into the state and it’s getting harder to get into these colleges every single year. I know all this because I’m a senior in high school and have gone through the process. I know a lot of smart kids that didn’t get accepted into A&M. I applied and was accepted into Texas, and A&M, but I can’t join the cult for obvious reasons.
