re: Anyone else been disproportionately summoned to jury duty?

I was summoned once in a civil case, they found out that I did accident investigations for vessel casualties and I was dismissed, never to be called again. I have been an expert witness three times.
When we lived in a small town, my wife came out of the grocery store and was handed a jury duty summons by a deputy. They were having a murder trial and ran out of prospective jurors; they took her directly to the courthouse. She was allowed to call me to bring her some clothes and to go get the groceries she left in the car. She didn't come home for 4 days. That poor SOB on trial didn't have a chance.

I got a summons when I was stationed in Germany around 1999. My mom called and told them I was in the Army overseas. The clerk had the audacity to tell her I had no choice. My mom told her "good luck". Never heard back from that one.
The second was basically the same but the clerk told my mom that they would take me off the "list". I've never been contacted since.

What is a proportionate amount? I have never been called that I know of.

I didn't get one until 4 years ago. I responded and went like a newb, then got summoned again within 8 months of that one. I ignored it and they stopped.

I was the only white guy with mostly black women and one hispanic woman n the case I served. I figure it was because I was a teacher and the defense thought I would have sympathy for the felon firing a gun on New Years Eve.
People think of jury “selection” backwards. It’s not selection; it’s elimination. Either they did in fact think you were good for them, they didn’t think you were worth a strike, or you were in the last panel and they ran out of strikes. But attorneys on both sides don’t “pick” jurors. Anyone who is clearly a good juror for one side is going to be struck by the other.

3 times in my life. Never had to go. The last time was during COVID. I was so burnt out from work therefore desperately hoping to get to take off and sit on a jury. The defendant agreed to a plea deal so we were dismissed during selection.
Have to admit, I was kind of disappointed. If the chance ever comes up again, I would be a good juror and take it seriously.

"Bro what if like, when you select your dinner, you're actually just eliminating all the other dinners you didn't want?"

That would be a great analogy… if you were presented options a few at a time and could only say “no” to a set number of them before you had to just take whatever was offered next
You have a set number of strikes. Panels are called up one at a time. You have no idea whether your next panel will be better or worse. Strikes are about getting rid of people you hate so that both sides end up with people they can live with. I appreciate that, if you’ve never done it, it sounds like a distinction without a difference, but I promise you it isn’t.

I know how it works, i just found the concept of selection vs elimination funny in general. It wasn't a dig or critique.

I don’t know. Once in a lifetime?
There are 660k people in Jefferson County, AL. AI says there are on average 160 felony jury trials per year. Around 100 civil cases per year.
The odds of me being selected three damn times in fifteen years seems pretty disproportionate.

I’ve been selected twice in 34 years. Once I got out of it because I had just moved out of state. Second time I went two days, wasn’t selected and told to go home. I’ve been a fortunate one.

Harris County checking in.
There was a time it seemed like my wife and I were both getting summoned every other year between Municipal, County, and Federal court.
But neither of us have been summoned in the past 4 years.
That’s just what random looks like.

I got called 2 years in a row. The first time they released the jury pool because the guy on trial took a plea deal right before it started.
The next year got called again and had to serve on the grand jury. That took about 8 days. I am exempt from serving for either 3 or 5 years now- I can't remember which.
Before that I had never been summoned and had been here for 12 years.

I was only ever called once. I would be a professional juror if I could.

My drivers license is in a place that has a small population but also has city, county, state, and fed courts. I get a summons for jury duty every 15 months. I only served on one jury for a Fed case. I typically get kicked off for various reasons.

I've been 3 times, but I actually enjoy it. I really don't understand why everybody hates it so much.
I’m in sales. If I want to frick off for day I just start day drinking with the boys. Way better than jury duty.

Personally, I don’t care if Ja’Quanda shot Latisha and whether they will be sentenced or not. They’ll do it again and you have to sit through hours of lawyer talk. I’d rather go to work

3 times in the 7 years I've been in Texas, never made it to the actual jury. The funniest part is 2 of times I was summoned in Texas I was also summoned at my parents house in Louisiana, since the parish never removed me from the voter roll despite being registered in Texas. That has now been resolved

Probably because many people have jobs that don't compensate them enough or at all.
My work gives full pay and all you have to do is give them the money county pays to attend court. I was on a 2 week trial and got my full pay.
Imagine if you are an innocent defendant you would want me on your jury. You would hope people that care are seated.
I despise those who do anything to get out of it. It’s one of the great things about our country, let the peers decide not some paid off stooge .
