Little bro is buying himself a car on his own for the first time and one of the ones he's looking at is a 2017 Mazda3. Neither of us know anybody who owns a Mazda so I'm just looking for some first-hand feedback.
Are they reliable? Is there anything he should know before purchasing a Mazda?

I have a CX-9, 83k miles.. I've had zero problems mechanically.
The bluetooth/radio controls are the worst though. I'll take that over having to put it in the shop all the time.

Not sure about the newer ones but I did buy my wife a Mazda 626 once and it was a POS with a terrible transmission that went out about 75K miles. I later found out that one of my brother-in-laws had bought one for his daughter a few years before and the same thing happened to that transmission.
That made me swear off Mazda and I'll never own another one. But, who knows what they've done with them since then. Just for you peace of mind, I'd head to a transmission shop and ask how reliable their product is now. My guy told me that they were know for shite transmissions back when I owned one.

The wife has had two Mazdas. She has loved both of them. But, they are a pain in the arse to work on; they're made for little Japanese hands.

He doesn’t want a truck? How are your parents taking him coming out?

Sounds like positive reviews for the most part.
Thank y'all, I appreciate the input

I had a 626 back in the 90's. It was a great car . zero problems.

My first car was a 94 Mazda Protege. It was alright. The Mazda 3's have gotten good reviews. I'd buy one.

The Mazda 3 models for the USA market are built primarily in a Mazda factory in Méxícó.
Some Japanese-built Mazda 3s are still available, I think I remember them being higher trim levels/powertrain combination units.
Avoid the Mexico-builts if possible, the Japanese vehicles are OK basic transportation.
(VINs for Japanese-built start with “J”, Mexico-built start with “3”.)

Imo mazda is the best value of the entry level brands. You can get a fully loaded cx 5 for under 30k. Reliability *might* not be on par with Toyota but probably not far off. The interiors are great. Far superior imo to the lower level audi/bmw/merc interiors of just a few years ago.
My sister is looking at 2016 Audi Q5s. Comparing them to a 2018/19 cx5 (same price range) and I can't find a single category the audi wins other than brand prestige.

My wife has a 2013 CX 5 with a 120 k miles on it and it’s been a great car. I hope she gets 2 more years out of it which I think she will with no problem.

I've heard nothing but praise for the Mazda 3's handling. Good looking car too.

Wife had a 6. It was a good amount of car for the money. It was stolen while parked in Valet. Bought her friends 2005 3 from her. It had 65k on it and we paid $7,000 for it in 2012.
Gave the 3 to my daughter. It is at 145k now. Never had an issue other than the A/C fan switch is crap. It fades in and out. I am changing the ATF tomorrow. It has been a good little car.
