Unions role is similar to Real Estate Agents.

Take more than they give. Way more.

I’ve been in two teacher’s unions. And in Louisiana and Alabama they don’t do much except tell you how to jump through hoops and not frick your careers up.

They have no real power. I could get fired tomorrow for no reason and have no recourse.

I know we love to hate on unions here, but they exist for a reason and many of our labor laws and work benefits were first introduced through CBAs.

Any SAG members on here? Nothing beats a union with hefty dues in which 98% of their membership is unemployed at any given time.

SAG is one of the useful ones. It's not there to protect Brad Pitt, it's there to protect the other 300 people working on the set to make the movie.

ive worked in a union plant and non union plant. I preferred the non union when I first started. but after 11 years, ive seen that management has no issue absolutely screwing employees by understaffing. Its become a toxic place to work. Never thought Id say it but I could see the operators forming a union and I wouldnt blame them.

Depends on the field. There are a lot of unions that really serve no purpose and could go away and no one would notice. There are others who do a great job and their presence and efforts through the years have led to much safer workplaces with better pay and benefits.

HR departments ruined what good a union could be used for.

They don't work all the time because of the nature of the business.

SAG and other movie industry unions have fantastic contracts - with great health insurance. I know of at least one SAG member who has had terrible bouts of cancer and is only alive because of his high level of SAG sponsored health insurance.

Well that’s a ULP for union busting right there.

My uncle is the most hardline right wing conservative that I know. Basically, a prepper for most of his life.

He got into SAG and loves it. Never made so much in his life. The hours are killer. 14+ hour days for months at a time. But he went from penniless to ready to retire in less than a decade.
Work ethic and giving a damn are the reason he has done well. But the scale is 100% provided by the union.
He also took his disposable income and invested in heavy equipment that he leases back to the production for use.

I personally wouldn't join a union. But I don't work in an industry where it is union or unemployment (like the film industry).

Another approach is being a kick azz, indispensable employee.

not SAG, but another film industry related union IATSE. Pay increases every year, great healthcare, paid holidays, pension and 401K.

My total annual dues equal two days of work and are write offs.

And you can't work on studio films as a non-member, so works for me.

This was my experience. The laziest and whiniest employees were at our unionized plants. Making ANY changes at those plants was always met with resistance.

Unions don't protect good workers, because good workers will have no problem staying employed. All unions do is make it impossible to cut dead weight.

They can be useful. My wife (a Hispanic woman) was a teacher at a predominantly black school and failed a black student. The student's mom wanted her fired because she claimed it was because of racial biases (the kid almost failed all of her other classes and failed one where the teacher was black) andthe black principal was not really defending my wife. The union got involved and the next week the case was dropped. We didn't have to spend anything. There's shitty bosses and nepotism is still a very common thing. 100% of bosses and owners arent altruistic. So yes, they are still needed to an extent.

No doubt our company would treat us like shite without it, they walk a thin line now.

Our HR department is terrible they never side with the employee and will do everything they can to screw the us.

I have worked for companies big and small. None Unionized. I have never been treated like shite or screwed over. This is some Union Boogeyman talk. A company will not even exist very long if it treats its employees like this.

Unions were needed in the early 1900's. Then democrats got involved. Then organized crime got involved. Then right-to-work came along and rendered the entire model obsolete.

That was 60 years ago. That's about how long unions have had no real need to exist.

Today it's all just a pyramid scheme. Anyone dumb enough to pay into it deserves their fleecing.

Wrong on both accounts. I'm union, many of my coworkers are not. The company has the passive/aggressive gig down pat with them. They can and often treat them like shite including firing them without recourse but whenever an organizing movement starts gaining steam, they throw them a few bones to keep the union off property.
