Somewhat surprising to me.

quote:

The late TV chef Anthony Bourdain was worth just $1.21 million when he hanged himself last month, new legal filings revealed Thursday.

quote:

Previous estimates had pegged his fortune at $16 million.

Bourdain’s will leaves the bulk of his money to his 11-year-old daughter Ariane Busia-Bourdain and the control over his estate to her mother, his estranged wife Ottavia Busia-Bourdain. It was filed in Manhattan Surrogate’s Court.

His assets include $425,000 in “cash and savings,” $35,000 in a brokerage account, $250,000 and “personal property,” and $500,000 in “intangible property including royalties and residuals,” according to court papers.

Either he spent a lot of money or did not make a lot of money.

Anthony bourdain was a culinary genius. I always enjoyed his minimalist style. Many of his favorite recipes could be prepared with just a spoon and a flame.

There has to be more to the story if that's all he had.

Recycling jokes now. Still a good one though.

So true. No way he could have driven a baw'd out Chevy.

The truck note alone would have eaten him alive.

Those fortune magazine estimates always seems to be on the high end judging people's net worth, but whatever source was used to estimate really missed on this one.

I can't believe he wasn't worth at least $10 to $20 million in restaurant and TV deals or something. I guess he didn't whore himself out. It's a crazy world where a guy like George Foreman is worth a lot more for a freaking press grill.

I saw that, any idea what his royalties and income from his TV shows were? Curious if maybe he wasn't paid as much as you'd expect?

I saw that he also had a mortgage on a million dollar property.

Is it possible some of the money was in a trust or something outside of his name?

Finally, I mean a guy like him with his drinking, drugs, and lifestyle that's not surprising at all to me.

I read that too and had to do a double take.

But if you look at the number of people who live paycheck to paycheck and how many of those couldn't produce $400 cash in the event of an emergency, we should not be surprised. Not excusing it, but the average Joe is broke and would be up shite Creek if employment ended unexpectedly.

But man, that new vehicle financed for 84 months ... but I got 0 % interest looks and feels nice.

I spoke with a young person (mid 30's recently) and they informed me that they do not have a retirement account. This person had asked if we offer one and was completely shocked when I informed them that even if your employer does not provide a 401k option, you can still invest up to $5500 of your own money in a Roth IRA every year. Mind blown they were. And here is the kicker ... later in the conversation, they revealed that they just bought a brand new truck from a dealership less than a week ago.

I also would not doubt he invested in a restaurant or 2 that went south? Those "celebrity" restraunts are millions, $5-10 mil invested sometimes especially somewhere like NYC. I could easily see him having some investments go bad.

Seems a lot of people assume that if THEY see someone as a celebrity, then they think that person must be raking in money hand over fist. Thing is, we've created so many celebrity niches in our world today that it shouldn't be surprising to find out that these people are not all necessarily wealthy beyond belief - especially those types who may have had other, perhaps destructive, issues in their lives before gaining their niche celebrity status.

didn't he just get divorced?

that might have hit him hard, cash wise, as well

might be why he had so much money in cash
