Can’t find anything on an actual divorce. Looks like they separated 2 years ago, but nothing was done before he died.

Possibility a good bit of his assets were moved around knowing a divorce was coming? That's SOP in my family.

also would not doubt he invested in a restaurant or 2 that went south? Those "celebrity" restraunts are millions, $5-10 mil invested sometimes especially somewhere like NYC. I could easily see him having some investments go bad.

Could be

He also started in a hole (both drugs and tax issues), had only been on CNN for five years. Throw in a divorce, child, and dating an Italian actress.....

While he wasn’t super flashy he sure didn’t strike me as a coupon clipper either.

Everything stated about the separation was very amicable and in the best interest of the kid.

Obviously we don’t know for sure.

A travel job like that I would bet doesn't have to pay that much, as part of the pay is experience. I mean how hard is it to really find someone to do that job even with crappy pay? Would you like to film a travel show for 6 months of the year for $100k? Sure

you would get 30 viewers. He was getting millions of viewers a night.

That’s not that unusual for someone in their 60s, even folks of modest means. Many just stash savings in a bank account or CDs and build up a nice balance over the years.

I saw that, any idea what his royalties and income from his TV shows were? Curious if maybe he wasn't paid as much as you'd expect?

I saw that he also had a mortgage on a million dollar property.

Is it possible some of the money was in a trust or something outside of his name?

Finally, I mean a guy like him with his drinking, drugs, and lifestyle that's not surprising at all to me.

This is actually a really good point. Or, that is what he has to date, because with all his shows and popularity the royalty stream should be pretty large.

Royalties greatly depend on the contract. Many hosts/actors negotiate higher upfront pay in return for little royalty incentive.

The mortgage of $1.1 million may have been for his recently bought home.

$3.35 million home in NYC just a few years ago.
But probably not, as it's not listed in his inventory. That mortgage was probably costing him 10k a month, which would explain the need for cash to carry him through the time when he wasn't working, which was at least half the year.

Would he be getting beaucoup royalties? No. All the other personnel are sharing them. Remember the million dollars per episode that each of the "Friends" were getting? That was the prime time NBC money cow show.

Bourdain never had that viewership, nor did he have advertisers clamouring for his endorsement. He said he didn't want them, but with his having written about his lifestyle, he probably said that preemptively.

That mortgage is going to force the estate to settle quickly. And the taxes will eat a lot of it because New York. Federal taxes are miniscule.

Did he kill himself because the still unresolved divorce was going to take a whole lot of what he had?

They way the royalties are phrased in the OP, it sounds like the $500k is the present value of the future income. Could be wrong though.

ETA - it's also entirely possible, if not likely, that he's done estate planning in an effort to avoid estate taxes. Up until last year he would have had issues with an estate over $11MM between he and his wife. That limit was doubled under the Trump tax cuts.

Not in movies and television. They are standardized. Contingent Compensation/Profit Participation beyond the standard royalties can be negotiated.

That was my first thought. Many people pass down their money through trusts to avoid inheritance taxes. The lawyer who oversees the trust would have instructions on who becomes the new administrator upon his death.

I don't know, but I think this would not have to go through probate court since it is a separate entity.
