Agree.

He wasn't a world renowned chef. He has admitted to not being a very good chef. I can't imagine his writing was getting him much.

He had a travel blog on tv

You can't do that forever.

Not surprised at all. Besides drugs, how much do y'all really think someone on the travel channel was making?

So the guy offed himself and didn’t have the decency to leave his young daughter anything. Selfish, drug addicted, narcissistic prick.

Recycling jokes now. Still a good one though.

I enjoyed it the first two threads he posted it in. It's lost some luster.

Umm...

I’m really surprised.

He was well known and liked across the world and his audience was valuable to advertisers. He should be worth at minimum 10s of millions. He could probably name his price for endorsements.

I was surprised by this, too. My retirement accounts are better off than his, but I’m not paying for a million dollar home.

But if you look at the number of people who live paycheck to paycheck and how many of those couldn't produce $400 cash in the event of an emergency, we should not be surprised. Not excusing it, but the average Joe is broke and would be up shite Creek if employment ended unexpectedly.

It’s scary as hell to imagine an average 61 year old not having more than $500k saved, let alone someone with his earning power. That is a bleak retirement.

I'd guess the travel channel didn't pay much, but once he went to CNN I have to assume he was clearing at least $1 mil a year right? If not 2-3 times that? I have no idea what royalties were.

A travel job like that I would bet doesn't have to pay that much, as part of the pay is experience. I mean how hard is it to really find someone to do that job even with crappy pay? Would you like to film a travel show for 6 months of the year for $100k? Sure

He purchased a $3.35 million home in NYC just a few years ago. Did he sell it recently? How was he not worth more than $1.2 million based solely on the apartment?

restaurant and TV deals or something. I guess he didn't whore himself out.

You are correct. He hated celebrity chefs that all of a sudden became expert pan or knife makers. He refused to do it.

Divorce. I don’t think it was finalized even at the time of his death.
