Maybe Yazoo has gone to shite. It’s been 16-17 years since I lived there but back then it was about 50-50 white/black and main st was a nice charming shopping center and the modern areas along hwy 49 were decent. It had the chemical plant, Simmons catfish processing plant, federal prison as main job drivers.

I know the local private school attendance has sharply decreased so maybe all the middle class folk have fled since then and let the town go to shite. Shame because it used to be one of the nicer delta towns

Yazoo City was consistently voted one of the best small towns in the US in the 70’s. They had a pretty tame integration, and the public school was 50/50 well into the early 90’s. When the chemical plant went through a transition in the late 90’s, they laid off a shite ton of people, and it quickly caught up to all the other shitty delta towns. Most of the prison workforce is a bunch of transplants just weathering the storm to move up in the system.

Now there are so many Yazooans living in Madison/Gluckstadt/Flora it’s ridiculous. I grew up in town from 1987 until I left college in 2009 and it was making a change during that time. My parents finally moved out to the country in 2015, and just were able to sell their house in late 2019... Now, there’s probably not 15 houses in Yazoo City city limits that I would be comfortable buying.

If I were to move back, I’d try to live out at Wolf Lake or in the hills somewhere in solidarity, and just go to town on a need to basis.

I know Mayor Leroy- good dude actually. But Donaldsonville is an unrelenting shitehole. It feels malevolent at night, everybody walking around in the shadows, people walking up on you in those neighborhoods in the middle of town, people hanging out at the car wash, etc. When I was a kid it was actually considered kind of quaint and charming.

Worked down there for quite a while and didn't think the city was that bad. During the day it really isn't. Then I had to occasion to pass through around 11:00 one night and dudes partying at the Subway and gas pumps were a sight to see.

Interesting to see both #1 and #2 on this list have CF Industries facilities in their town.

Only one city up North and it's not even Flint?

These lists are always from some Yankee a-hole looking down at us poor, benighted southerners.

Just in the delta alone Greenville, Clarksdale, Belzoni are way shittier. Not including the smaller towns of 1500 or less people that are all complete shite

I would have thought Greenville (47) would have been ranked before Yazoo City.

Out of all of the bigger cities in the Delta, Greenville would be my last choice of a place to live.

The fact they don't have Barstow, California on this list makes me dubious. That place is truly the armpit of the southwest U.S.

Yep. Camden, NJ and Youngstown, OH are both shittier than a few places on here.

I think Mississippi Chemical might still have some sort of operation there but I’m not sure the extent of what they’re doing. Main Street is still nice and colorful but there certainly has been a flight of people out of there in that time frame. “Goin to town” was one of my favorite days at my grandparents house. It meant I got to go to the Sunflower grocery store and eat chicken livers from the deli as me and my grandma walked around, and if I was lucky I could get a VHS at the k mart. Let’s not forget the witches grave and the haunted Satartia bridge too. Our little place off hwy 3 will always be my little slice of paradise but unfortunately the local economy has little to offer.

Ran a small railroad project down there for a couple days.

My head was on a swivel the entire time.

The Corpus Christi airport is in or really close to Robstown. It's not a nice place.
