Am I poor?

People here in Little Rock are buying 600k-850k homes like they are nothing. Driving brand new 50k cars and eating out every night.
We own our home and live within our means.
What am I missing?

Congrats on owning your home and living within your means

If you have to ask. . .
You may be the only smart one in Little Rock. Most of those folks are keeping up with the Jones' and are in debt up to their eyeballs.

No one has savings, that's the invisible part

I saw an old acquaintance on facebook the other day, who lives in LR area, bought herself a brand new $70k Mercedes SUV. She is a respiratory tech, her husband is a lineman. The caption was "Mama needed a new ride!"

That's factoring in life threatening ghettos where homes are basically free.

I was in the chenal area a couple of weeks ago. I can't figure out how that many people can afford to live like that.

Little Rock seemed to be the biggest ‘keeping up with the Jonses’ environment I’ve ever been too.

It sounds like you are wise and managing your household the right way.

No you are not and most of those people are in debt up to their eyeballs. You can operate from a position of frick you and most of them are debt slaves.

It is OK to be poor.
The question is if you are white trash.

You are probably old
Folks with those kind of values are probably 65 and older
Welcome to the Senior Life my friend.

It's really not that expensive to finance cars and a home, some people choose to do that, and other people choose to and live modestly. Some of the people you described are in debt, others may have gotten a nice down payment from parents, and others actually do make a lot more money than you think. Just don't think of it as a contest.

Someone doesn't know the difference between median and mean!

It’s not just Little Rock, I see this everywhere. Everyone will just say they’re in debt but the question remains how the hell are they getting approved for all this shite.

When you are retired and enjoying life those people will still be getting up in the morning and going to a job they hate with little or no hope of getting out of endless debt.
Congrats on not being one of them.

Debt-to-income ratio doesn't show up in the driveway

Rich people live within their means. The bill will come due for those other people sooner or later.

You're only noticing a relatively tiny percentage of your neighbors. For every "rich" person you see driving a new 50k car or buying a ~1M house, there are 50 that are living WELL below that level.
