They braked just before impact. Paying attention wouldn't have affected this freak accident I don't think.

I’ve experienced something similar. Luckily, the tire came off of the vehicle far enough ahead of me that I was able to avoid it. Nothing quite like trying to dodge a tire bouncing down the interstate toward you.

One happened in front of me on the interstate. Trailer tire flew off.

Guy at work had his car hit by a set of duals off a semi trailer. Whole hub came off the axle, crossed the median and smashed the front of his car to shite and rolled right up and over the windshield and roof. Totaled the car. He said he saw it coming, nothing he could do but clench.

If i am driving on the best road system in the world with a 12inch wide concrete barrier, and a truck tire comes at me......it was just my time.

you can see the tire(i guess thats what it is) in the background after the collision go into the air several feet above the overpass. Wild!

I was riding on a motorcycle on I-10 near Biloxi/Gulfport (3 lanes as I recall) when the truck just in front of me had a blowout.
I was blasted by what seemed to be pellets. A huge portion of the tire came off and went between me and my riding partner who was a few yards behind me.
It really didn't effect me until I got off a few miles later but as we recounted the incident, it sort of shook me up and caused me to thank Almighty God.

It looks like it landed ON the overpass.

That would be my reaction every time I got off of a motorcycle alive.
No offense to you, that’s your choice. Motorcycles on highways have always seemed like a “matter of time” thing to me.

I saw something just like that happen when a trailer lost a tire in west texas and it smoked a crew truck.

Journey warned us of this phenomenon back in the late seventies.

They were only addressing the “after impact” part, imo.

It does. And keeps bouncing even. Good Lord.
Reminds me of that horrible brick video where it just comes from the opposite direction and straight through the windshield like a bullet. IIRC, it kills the passenger and you can hear the driver screaming in emotional agony. It hits and there’s sort of an “holy shite” reaction and then after a split second they start screaming and crying. All you can see in the video is the brick hitting the windshield (i.e. not gory at all), but it’s not hard to figure out what happened. That video stayed with me a while after I saw it because of the pure emotional response.

If they don't brake, it smashes into their windshield!!
