People didn't go to concerts and sporting events in 2006? Hell every LSU game I went to was fricking packed that year. Most people in the area lost all or most of their possessions the year prior but the dome sure was packed to the gills that season.

Cancer retired me at 54 in 2017. My wife retired in 2023. We bought our retirement home on the lake. Other than physical issues; I love retirement and I find joy and happiness each day I wake up. Statistically, I should not be here so each day is a blessing.

Wonder how many of these respondents define "fun" as based on something they've seen or heard of on social media?

CapitalOne had a question on their annual associate survey: "Is work fun?"
Every year I'd respond "No" and give them hell in the free form comments. Not that it made any difference.
I'm retired, 64, and find fun in something every day. Find something to look forward to.
Tomorrow? It's gonna be taking the kayak out fishing with some new changes I made to my rig. Can't wait.
People are responsible for their own happiness. If they aren't, they have noone to blame but themselves.

I was referring more to the apps, streaming services, food delivery services, etc.

In 2006, I don't remember concert tickets being $600+ for floor seats.
Ex: 3rd row for Bruno Mars in New Orleans is $1,300 per ticket. 20 rows back drops to $700.

People should lighten up. It could always be worse and no one gets out alive.

- Have children - they are the fun in life
- Get off of Social Media.
- Stop thinking that fun is attached to things, stuff, etc. - Stop going into debt to "travel," even though it seems fun... take a roadtrip, not a cruise or international flight that puts you in debt.
- Stop trying to keep up with the Joneses if you can't.
- Realize your lot in life, and work within that, or accept the sacrifices that require you to get out of that.
- Life is not about comfort. Comfort is only fun for a limited amount of time.
- Sacrifice shapes the soul
- Find peace in suffering and discomfort. Life is not, and never will be, perfect.
This is a truly wise post. Well said and all good pearls.

However, I find more and more people are letting toxic people into their lives for various reasons and it’s deflating a lot of joy.

Another thing to add would be to exercise when you are able and try to eat healthy about 80% of the time. If you’re not feeling good physically, it has a stronger tie than you might think to your overall mental state (including happiness).

This is exactly right….all you have to do is ALLOW yourself to enjoy the day. Frankly, most people I know are so wrapped up in entertaining their kids that they don’t enjoy their own lives.

Day to day, moment to moment parenting can be a grind at times, but my kids and husband are usually my source of "fun", silly simple moments, meaningful ones and a whole lot of gratitude that they are 'mine'.

Some truth to this
Also, no one considers things like hiking and picnics in a state park as fun anymore. shite, we go fishing and swimming for free all the time in state parks.
It's unfortunate but true and I don't understand it. I love going to a state park on a Saturday and going fishing or kayaking or hiking/going on a trail. Heck even just a Saturday relaxing at the pool and swimming is nice.
Honestly once I hit 25 I had no interest in clubs anymore. I can only imagine how expensive they are now. At 30 I stopped caring about fancy restaurants and even most bars outside of my local independent bar.
I genuinely could care less about MLB or NBA so no worries there and do not pay the crazy prices for concert tickets. NFL is the only professional league I follow and I only go to 1, maybe 2 games a year.
People need to stop keeping up with the joneses. There are still ways to have cheap fun. National Parks and Forests, State Parks and Forests, community parks. There are also ways to cut down on expenses. As we get into summer, if you are going to the beach, make sure to pack food and alcohol instead of going to an expensive restaurants and/or bars on the beach.
The biggest challenge I think is how antisocial and busy everyone is. That's the thing I've noticed as I've gotten older, before 2 of my best friends and I could meet up with a day or two notice. Now it's like at least a week if not 2 weeks notice to put aside time to meet up. Another one of my friends is even worse. They put stuff in their calendar on their iPhone. I feel like a lot of the time I need to give them like 2-3 weeks notice to hang out and do something.
