We all knew he was never going to spend a day in jail:

Though still facing involuntary manslaughter charges, Alec Baldwin will no longer have to fear a five-year prison sentence for the fatal shooting of Rust cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
“In order to avoid further litigious distractions by Mr. Baldwin and his attorneys, the District Attorney and the special prosecutor have removed the firearm enhancement to the involuntary manslaughter charges in the death of Halyna Hutchins on the Rust film set,” Heather Brewer, spokesperson for New Mexico First Judicial D.A. Mary Carmack-Altwies told Deadline this morning. “The prosecution’s priority is securing justice, not securing billable hours for big-city attorneys,” tossing some distinct swipe at the contentious Baldwin and his lawyers.

That was expected and they'll need him to hit a balloon from 60,000 paces.

Lulz at anyone who believed that Baldwin would actually do time.

Pretty bold statement, that charges are being reduced because Baldwin's attorneys were making the original charges too danged inconvenient to pursue.
" Litigious Distractions", great name for a band, but apparently an even better legal strategy

Is this the saying the silent part out loud where the DA just admitted that you can buy your way out of jail time?

Read the whole thing. He's still facing the involuntary manslaughter charge.

It is the legal strategy of the rich and powerful. The legal system is not designed for common folks.

I thought it was absurd that they would drop the firearm enhancement to the charge considering the manslaughter was made possible by a firearm, but then I found in the article that the reason they're dropping the firearm enhancement is because they changed the statute well after the incident took place.
quote:
“The prosecutors in this case have committed an unconstitutional and elementary legal error by charging Mr. Baldwin under a statute that did not exist on the date of the accident,” said Baldwin’s defense team in a motion filed in New Mexico court on February 10. “It thus appears that the government intended to charge the current version of the firearm enhancement statute, which was not enacted until May 18, 2022, seven months after the accident,” the filing went on to say.

yeah i really dont care what happens to baldwin but doesnt seem right to use this against him if it was put in place after the incident occurred. wonder why he cant be charged with whatever version was in play at the time of the shooting.

Why would he do time? It was pure workplace negligence (no defense) for which Baldwin's company should be made to pay full compensation.

I’m conservative as they come but I don’t think Baldwin should be charged with anything. This was the prop woman’s job. There is no way actors check their weapons for live ammo every time they fire them on a set. Having live ammo on a set should not even be a possibility. I think actors should be able to assume the guns they are using to make a movie are not going to kill someone.
