The wal mart on Burbank has pretty nice choice steaks.

It's all relative. I've never gotten bad seafood at Whole Foods, I have elsewhere. I live in Chicago, so fresh seafood isn't a guarantee. One of the reasons I'll get it at Whole Foods is because the turnover of inventory is much higher. The people shopping at Wal Mart aren't going through tens of dozens of diver scallops a week, the Lincoln Park Whole Foods does.
I'm sure for beef here the difference isn't as pronounced, but I find that grass fed beef and less common cuts like hangar steak are still more plentiful at my local Hungarian butcher than either of the others.
However, when it comes to pasta, milk or any other common good I'll be at the local chain store.

I can guarantee I can tell the difference in eggs and most people I know can as well.

I agree with Martini. If you can't tell the difference then you suck at raising chickens or at eating eggs. Or both.

At least around here wal mart has a store brand organic chicken (it's called nature harvest or some kind of shite like that) that is actually really good.

No kidding. Eggs are one of the few things you can actually tell the difference. The difference in yolk quality is like the difference between a PT Cruiser and a Bugatti.

What has the OT become? We went from "my butler goes to organic farms to get my ingredients for my chef to cook" to "Whole Foods is a bit pricey for my taste".
You're paying for the experience and, to a lesser extent, the variety, and then again, to an even lesser extent, the quality.
I don't think Whole Foods pretends to be anything else. It's their niche. They created it, developed it, and have made fistfuls of money from it. Even before Whole Foods came around, the regular grocery stores sold most of what Whole Foods sells, often at similar prices, as organic or premium you'll find in Jewel Osco or Publix or Kroger is virtually identical to what WF sells. Whole Foods centralized distribution on those disparate products, added a bunch of experiential elements (hot bar, lots of sampling, lots of environmental features, etc.), and voila.
Kroger and the rest have adapted, but I also think they're really getting hit on the Blue Apron-like services (who have been making huge marketing investments recently). WF is a pretty smart company led by capable people. I think they'll probably be OK.

Blue Apron is pretty solid, but they're actually starting to face a ton of competition on the middle-high and premium end right now, at least here in Chicago. These new start ups are all about direct farm-to-table. I'm sure they'll face scale problems, but they're putting their money where their mouths are for the moment.
Amazon is starting to get into this grocery-shopping game, and I think Kroger and Whole Foods and Publix and the rest probably aren't far behind with either a delivery or synthetic shopping service.
Whatever - in the end, it's all great for the customer. Competition is fierce as hell in that business. The physical products themselves are commoditized, so it's all about ease of transaction or premium services or whatever else differentiates you. It's exactly how our economic system is supposed to work.

I don't eat egg yolks unless it's in potato salad but I'd put money that if I blind folded you and gave you 3 eggs, you wouldnt know where each came from

Speaking of that, I have a cousin (you don't want pics) that went on a rant the other day on FB. One of her co-workers offered to go get her lunch and come back with the salad she ordered but WITH croutons on it. Now she couldn't eat lunch at all because she couldn't PICK THE frickING CROUTONS OUT and just eat it because the croutons had touched the rest of the salad. She went on about how inconsiderate this person was of her "gluten allergy" and if they couldn't get her order right they shouldn't offer to go get her lunch. I still want to punch her in her FUPA.
