oh I definitely agree with this

I think the people that go on tirades about how if you don't use the proper pronouns or refer to Bruce as "Caitlyn", you are a bigot to be just as annoying as the people sharing every FB chain thing about how we shouldn't accept this or yelling that America is going down the drain

they are the same person, just on opposite ends of the spectrum IMO

In fact, the only IRL discussion I've had at all about this particular topic was last night when I jokingly told my wife that people on this board had completely lost their fricking minds about this topic. Then I went back to talking about shite that matters to my daily life...

I had the same conversation with someone last night who was talking about people losing their minds all over facebook about it. If you're going to be upset about something that doesn't directly effect you, why not lose your mind about the murders, rapes, and child abuse going on in this country. Those things are actually hurting people. Unless you find yourself oddly attracted to someone who looks like they had the same plastic surgeon as Jessica Lange, I just don't see why anyone would care.

This can NEVER be said enough, though let's be honest...neither group will accept this truth.

I just do not think we are going to have to worry about this as much as people think

we hear the vocal minority on these things, but they are still, and will be in the future, a very small percentage of people

I could be wrong though

As could the other side. And that's the problem with making such rash changes in how we approach normalization, we have no idea of the future effects of something so unquantifiable. We don't know that i we normalize certain behaviors, that in 50 years 20% of kids grow up "genderless," which could be a huge problem. What happens to birthrates (ok so some on the left would be excited if rates decline). What happens to moral values? These things are core. There's a chance that we're seriously affecting the way we look at ourselves as a culture. That's a very real issue. We can't see with pinpoint accuracy what will happen, that's fair.

My big issue is that we're letting sexuality, and individual sexuality at that, drive MAJOR cultural issues. That's incredibly weird. That's an entire conversation unto itself, and a huge problem. But that's for another thread.

why do you need to agree or disagree with what a dude in California dresses like? There's a metric shite ton of things people do that I don't agree with, but unless and until they involve me personally some way, I don't see where I need to involve myself in their crap.

The last time I checked, this was a message board where people have discussions every day about shite that doesn't involve them. People have opinions all the time and this story is a national story, so don't act all shocked that people are offering up their opinion on the matter. Where I think this situation does involve people like you and me is when someone says "I'm still calling him Bruce" and they are shouted & shamed publicly by the same people that preach tolerance. That same mentality is being perpetuated in other issues and prevents honest discussions and promotes fear of disagreement.

I don't care about Bruce Jenner and what he does. However given the context of how his transition represents to some as a chance to promote some sort of gender neutral society, then I think that certainly allows me to have my opinion as well.

Hell...I have more trouble explaining THAT to my kids than Bruce Jenner is a dress...

I know the feeling. I'm going to struggle explaining to my children why its not ok to put their genitals on the foreheads of passed out LSU fans...

Animals can't consent. Kids can't consent.

Do chickens give us their consent to take their eggs? Animals don't consent to a lot of totally "morally " acceptable things we do to them so how is this any different?

If I tuck my weiner between my legs and change my name to REBA BEER, can I get in the cover of Vanity Fair?

I couldn't care less what Bruce Jenner does. I just don't like the media's agenda to shove this down everyone's throats as "normal".

Of course, this is the rational point of view. I agree.

The question is: WHY is Caitlyn Jenner being covered by the media non stop and why does she have more earning potential than would old weird Bruce?

I have posted the answer elsewhere in this thread. There is a political reason.

because for some reason, its controversial

and controversial issues equals more clicks, shares, viewers, etc, which equals more money

again, same as above

its about money

people say they don't care, but obviously we do, since it has been all over my FB and this board and pretty much everywhere the past week

You should read about the conclusions of this Johns Hopkins psychiatrist. He agrees that transgender is a mental disorder and also notes that most kids who have transgender feelings simply outgrow those thoughts.

What's next? Maybe polygamy but I think the changes we'll see will be related to ever increasing LGBTQ rights... hate speech rulings, etc.

I lean left, and was accepting of gay people as far back as hih school. I understand gay. You are attracted to the same sex. I still find it odd how someone can be attracted to the same sex, but I get it and am fine with it.

Finding it odd doesn't make me feel like you understand it.

Transgender on the other hand, I see as a mental illness. The reason why, is.. If you are born with a penis, you are a male, a vagina and you are a female. To me wanting to change sex is a mental thing, an identity or what have you.

To qualify as having a mental illness or disorder, the person must be suffering/unable to function in everyday life.

The answer, child molestors also claim that they are attracted to childern, like NAMBLA and other sick groups. They claim it is the way they were born.

It is.

quote:

Will bestiality become okay? I mean they were born liking beasts.

Will molestation become okay? They were born wanting to rape kids.

As long as both things are illegal and objectively harmful to other people, frick no.

quote:

Once we take what is a mental illness, and then transform it into acceptable behavior we open pandora's box.

This false premise is what your whole argument hinges on. The slippery slope fallacy. The idea that people are born a certain way doesn't automatically lead to acceptance into society, it is just reaching a point where we, as a society, understand the neurophysiological underpinnings of behavior and begin to think from a place of compassion instead of anger. We know that psychopaths, for instance, don't feel emotion like normal people do. Hating them for it is irrational. We understand their behavior because we understand what deficiencies lead to it. It isn't fricking mainstream acceptable behavior, though, and it never will be. That is why your premise is stupid.

The Hopkins article is really good. A lot of the adult transgender genital reassignment is related to a need for sexual gratification. Most are still attracted to the opposite sex.

my thing about the sex changing and what not... i realize Bruce Jenner could probably afford to pay for surgeries, the whole process, etc.

but it's a slippery slope... i don't want it to be where everyone of that persuasion thinks they have a right to change gender. Obamacare is bad enough, but if people think this is normal, and shout "bigot" at anyone who thinks otherwise, insurance premiums could go through the roof paying for this, and we're all affected

I understand it, I used odd instead of anything else. Personally the thought of a penis entering a mans hairy a-hole disgusts me. It is odd how one can be attracted to the same sex. It's accepted and I accept it. I don't feel weird around gay people and have no qualms.
Gay sex disgusts me though.
