So you say that the media covers it because it's controversial.

I thought about that and it occurred to me: "controversial" means that there are two valid points of view.

Is that what we have here? Is Caitlyn's story being presented with two valid points of view?

Seems to me that it's NOT being presented as a controversial issue with two valid points of view.

Seems to me that the ONLY valid opinion being presented to us by mass media and Hollywood is that Caitlyn is a courageous social justice warrior to be applauded.

So, I wonder whether there's any controversy here -- we seem to have been ASSIGNED a politically correct viewpoint to embrace, and there is no controversy about that.

I lean left, and was accepting of gay people as far back as hih school. I understand gay. You are attracted to the same sex. I still find it odd how someone can be attracted to the same sex, but I get it and am fine with it.

Transgender on the other hand, I see as a mental illness. The reason why, is.. If you are born with a penis, you are a male, a vagina and you are a female. To me wanting to change sex is a mental thing, an identity or what have you.

This is basically my take, too. Transgender is a disorder. Somehow their perception of their gender is at odds with their body type. Then there are people born with mixed physical characteristics, which is a different, but related condition.

Be that as it may, these people deserve compassion, and if they want to live as the opposite sex, it doesn't affect me. But, it is an abnormality, there's no getting around it. And expecting the rest of the world to conform to the abnormality by ignoring the obvious, is absurd and won't work in the long run, IYAM.

Gender is a social construct, for the iditots in this thread. Some cultures have 3 genders.

What gets me is the absolute intolerance by those who support him. Its straight up policing of thought and is really disturbing. A simple disagreement is met by calls of being a "bigot" and people are publicly shamed for having a different opinion. This comes from the same group that preaches "tolerance."

It's much more palatable to be intolerance of ignorance, bigotry and those that do not want an equal society for all than the reverse

The world is changing. If we are ever going to grow and succeed as a mult cultural country, then we will need to accept all people and walks of life that don't threaten or jeopardize human life

It is a social construct that is heavily influenced by your sexual biology

That is my only problem with this whole debate is that people keep wanting to say that gender and sex are not related when, in fact, they are are quite related

What we have here in this thread is posters that cant separate gender from sex , nurture from nature.

Our perception of "man" and "woman" is nothing more than a western, patrichial and Christian influencers social construct that fits in with how we see the world and how we set up our society to be.

Within our society; various other societies have more flexibility with their gender identification.

Yes genetic males are more inclined to various behaviors and genetic females are our only child bearing species, but that too is influenced by our environment and society

No, no it isn't. Sick people are having themselves medically altered to fit what they want. Then they want the 99.5% of the population that isn't a freak to tell them that they're normal.

To an extent. However, in a fundamental and more than just physiological way, men and women are different and have different traits and general natural roles on the average. I'm not really prepared to opine where nature starts and cultural norms starts and ends at this exact moment though.
