The other option at the time was communism which was/is just as bad. Actually worse if you were a middle of the road German. Socialized Germany was a pushback to communism costing them ww1 (pushing Germany into a depression) and gaining traction.

Apparently that picture was originally posted in a 1930s Nazi newspaper, and it's not really confirmed that it's really Hitler.
Hitler was 25 at the time and that guy looks older than 25 to me. (Although beards do tend to make people look older.)
Also, I don't really think that the technology existed to prove who the guy was until about the last 5 years.
And supposedly Hitler isn't believed to have had a mustache until he joined the army.
